towing with SuperChips 1700.....

Last year I bought a SC 1700 tuner from a friend to try while towing. This older programer only has two levels.!-tow safe & 2. off road. The book said not to use the off road setting on 94-98 trucks towing more than 4K unless you add a aftermarket down pipe and install a EFT gauge. I called SC and tech told me No even when I told him I had a down pipe + a cold air intake with a EGT gauge. WELL.......I tried the off road mode with with my 9-10,000 car trailer(loaded) to see what it would do since I liked the increase in power of the tow safe mode. It pulled better and the exhaust temps never got over 1200 !!!!! It hardly ever dumped OD. I thought it pulled great and appears to get good fuel mileage, loaded or empty.
Is there something I'm missing ? I don't want to F-up my PowerStroke !!!

Does anyone have any opinions ? I posted this in the diesel section rather than towing because it appeared that section had a lot of gas trucks posting there.
I think I'll be OK with the exhaust temps but not sure about other stuff....
Just looking for any hidden gremlins....

Is your pyro in the down pipe or the manifold? if it in the manifold then yes you temps are fine. that is the main concern when towing with a chip. also keep an eye on tranny temps.

Yes.....probe is in manifold/pre turbo. Trany temps haven't been over 185-195 in HOT weather. Normaly run about 155-165 on normal towing out of mountains...

I run synsetic trans fluid and gear lube. Will use in motor after I install a bypass filter.
Thanks for your reply..
BTW: What does "The Cure" do that a B&M controler doesn't do ?? Curious.

The Cure solves the TC unlokc/relock that happens at the OD shift point as well as the 3rd gear upshift on some PCM calibrations. I don't know what the B&M unit does but as far as I know the Cure is the only unit that fixes what it fixes. Here is a interesting thread that will give you much of the info you need. also click the link in my sig to go to the Cure's website.

Oh... those are kinda important...
So how hot can you get Mahle (sp?) coated pistons?
Does 1200* account for the loss in temp between Comb. chamber and exhaust manifold (although small)?

1200 degree is the extended perios temps. You can go over that for short burst. Aluminum melts at around 1250 but our pistons are an alloy as well as they have oil cooling jets under them, air movement over them and coolant cooling the cylinder walls. So heat soak is the big problem at those temps. Coated I am not really sure that gives you the green light for higher temps or not. One key to helping a new pistons is to remove the sharp edges from the combustion chamber in the piston (the bowl) rounding those edges can help stop heat cracks from forming.

Mahles are the stock pistons BTW.

Wow...
You are full of info... and thats good to know that mahle is stock.
So is the highest temp during combustion or exhaust cycle?

I would say the hottest temps are during the combustion but heat soak will be hottest at the end of the compression stroke thru the exhuast stroke. Then the piston gets hit with "cool" intake air.

I have the SC 1701, I think that's the number, its been awhile. I put it on tow safe a few years back and have never touched it. Now, with you trying the #2 of your 1700 makes me want to try my #2, I don't think I dare try #3. I tow 12K and am right up there at 1200 degrees once in awhile with a IC and etc., etc. Maybe it will surprise me. Mine is a fuel hog anyway, why not try it if the temps stay OK. I tow in the fast lane, 70 to 75 mph, I can't stand to go slow with all the power I have available, hence the fuel hog. I have two coolers on my trans and hardly ever get over 140. Glenn

My tuner is definitly the 1700...only has 2 programs !! Not sure of HP levels.
45HP & 72HP increases ..I think ?? My DP is only 3" and have stock cat back exhaust. With all the upgrades on your truck I would try it too....I'm no expert for sure. I watch my gauges like a hawk...diesel motors are $$$$$. I have only towed about a total of 250 miles ..so far. No mountains either, just typical rual VA foothills...

So is it the expansion and contraction cycle that cracks pistons?

Yes but going over 1200 for extended periods accelerates the cracking.
