exhaust tone

I am looking to upgrade the exhaust on my 98 f150 xlt 5.4 4x4. What i want is one that sounds good when you get into it but at idle and low speeds is quiet or as quiet as can be expected. Any suggestions.

Thanks
Dan

Take a look at youtube.com and type in your make model and engine size, then exhaust and you will get all kinds of video clips to watch. I have settled on a Borla exhaust but they don't make a kit for a 97f150 so I have to figure something out.

I just went through this myself, did a lot of "research" on youtube. Heard flowmasers, magnaflow, Borla etc. I couldnt make up my mind. I finally took it to a reputable local exhaust shop (not Midas or Mineke), told them what I wanted and they gave me a couple of ideas. I ended up going with a y pipe after the cats, followed by 2 -12 inch vortec mufflers and brought out the pipes on the corners of the bed with steel tips. I could never find anything on the vortec muflers on line, but they are just a round "tube" muffler. I don't wake up the neighbors when I start it, I can hear myself think when I run on the highway, but when you get into it you know its an aftermarket exhaust. BTW I have a 01 XLT 7700 5.4 4x4. The best advice I can give you is go talk to the guys at a good shop, and tell em what you want it to sound like. They should fix you up right.

Go to exhaustsoundclips.com to hear what stuff sounds like. If you want it to sound good and be cheap, just cut off the muffler. Alot of people have done it and like it.

That side pipe will eat the finish right off the wheel. Thats why they recalled them.

Wink

i went with the new delta technology flowmasters with the mildest sound quiet in cab outside you can hear it ...3" in single dual out 2.5 passenger side front of rear wheel ...sounds awesome when i hit the pedal when at idle cant hear it thats the way i like it... if jamming out you can hear what the heck you got on not like my brother in law turndowns/no cats; cant hear myself even think inside cab

5.4 f150 99 4x4

also for quiet cab sound GIBSON are best, to better sound outside
the new flowmaster deltas have this new technology as well now, check out their affiliates or web page

i have a flowmaster 40 series with flowtech hedders on there, it was loud but then i threw the headers on and it opened everything up, i was wondering if maybe i got "high flow" cats if it might make the tone louder... the only problem with my exhuast is that my passenger side leaks and i dont know where the leak is coming from because its not the hedder bolts maybe the collector?
