How do you determine the difference between the two different 302 dampers? The early ones had a 28 ounce offset and the later ones had a 50 ounce offset. I think the wrong one is on my early 302, but have never seen the two together. Casting numbers? Visual indicator? Anyone know? Thanks, polkat
If you have both types in front of you, the balance weight is noticably larger on the later one. I am pretty sure this is correct. I just checked one in my garage. The number is D20E-A2A. It is a 4 bolt one. Must be a 72.
Thanks Mike. That would be the number for the earlier one then? I'm pulling mine today so I'll check for that number (which I can't see while it's on). Polkat
The number is for the early one. It was near the timing marks. I think that there are several early ones that will have different numbers. 3 bolt vs 4 bolt, etc. I hope you get yours off ok.
Well, I started another thread earlier because there was a socket stuck on the damper bolt!! That lead me to wonder if it was the wrong damper poorly installed by a previous owner, and that either it or the stuck socket was causing my mild viabration. Tried to get it off today and, man, he must have welded that sucker on there! Tommorrow I'll pull the bolt itself and see what the deal is.
But I still can't see the part number! You say it's by the timing marks...on that same surface? Or on the side? Thanks, Polkat
The number was on the same surface as the timing marks, to the right of TDC. I think I have seen them on different locations though. You couldn't break the socket loose? I can't think of much except trying an impact wrench. Maybe the bolt would come out also.
