Hello everyone
I am new here. My truck is a 1997 f150 extend cab 4x4 lariat 5.4 fully loaded. Bought it in '99 with 12,000 miles and now has 283,000 miles. Only changed the oil and a couple of sensors since I have had it. Right now there are some squeaks and rattles but other than that thing has been fantastic.
Right now the engine is starting to ping when I accelerate. At first I thought it was bad gas but it does it no matter where I buy the gas. The engine check light isn't on so I am not aware of a potential sensor failure. Does anyone have any idea what I can do the resolve the issue or point me in the right direction?
EGR valve or DPFE sensor. I would lean toward the DPFE sensor, it controls the EGR valve and is a known weakness. It's only $50 to replace and takes all of 5 minutes. The EGR valve can be cleaned, lubed, exercised and reused.
The first thing that I would do is clean the MAF. You would surely have a CEL if the DPFE or EGR were a problem.
Maybe you do have a CEL and dont know it becasue of a burned out CEL lamp. Does the CEL light check good when the ignition switch is first turned on? Even if the CEL light is good, you may have it checked for codes as there may be a pending code. Good luck!

We never threw a CEL on our Expy or F150 but did on our old Ranger. It just Pinged like crazy. I'm sure if I had left it for a while it would eventually throw an EGR code like the Ranger
I assume they are mostly highway miles on your truck but I'd still get a motorvac done. Midas' and NAPA auto centers do them. Basically it will clean your combustion chamber out if it has some carbon buildup.
With 283K, I would pull at least one plug to check for excessive carbon on the plug prior to doing anything else.
However, be advised, you must be careful how you pull the plugs. First read the posts on changing plugs on this site, it is well worth the time to read.
Takes less than 5 minutes, start to finish, to clean your MAF sensor. My pinged like crazy until I cleaned it. AND... it shifts better and idles smoother. Do you have a K&N air filter? Oil from the filter can easily settle on those 2 very fine wires of the MAF sensor. Good Luck....

That is just the point. A dirty MAF will cause pinging and a code will not necessarily be thrown. A DPFE failure or problem will definitely throw a code. EGR vavles very seldom fail.
