i have what i think is a 428 cj can anyone tell me how i find out for sure? .i am planning on putting it in a 84 ranger.
Welcome to FTE
428: Measure the stroke, it's: 3.98 inches.
If it matches, that'll narrow it down to either a 1966/67 Mercury 410 engine, or a 1966/70 428. Both have the same stroke...the 428 engine is far more common.
If the stroke is 3.50 inches, it's a 352 or 360 engine / If the stroke is 3.78 inches, it's a 390 engine.
The 428 CJM/T flywheel and A/T flexplate are different than the ones for 352/360/390 and other 428 engines:
The 428 CJflywheel is marked: C8OE-A / the 428 CJflexplate is marked either: C6VP-B or C7AP-A.
Casting numbers: Not a good way to ID. The same block casting numbers were used for several different FE engines.
The crankshaft will have an ID number on one of the journals: 428 = 1U. In some rare cases, this number may also be found on the crank nose.
The problem with FE engines (352/360/390/406/410/427/428) is...they all look identical, and some sellers mis-represent these engines when they sell them. On sale day, a 352 magically becomes a 390, 428 or ?
While parts may be swapped around, the carb ID tag, the number stamped on the distributor base (just below the cap) once decoded, will tell EXACTLY what the original application of these parts were.
i dont wanna sound like a idiot but i kinda new at this how do u measure the stroke without taking the heads off, its a complete motor and it still runs, i dont wanna tear it apart unless i really have a reason.i also would like to know if a 8.8 rear end would hold the torque of something like this without mods
There is a way to use a thin wire such as a welding rod, pull a spark plug out and measure the stroke thru the hole by rotating the engine.
Best to post any 428 questions in the FE & FT Big Block V8 (332, 352, 360, 390, 406, 410, 427, 428) forum: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum51/
