Vibration from rear diff at takeoff
1995 XLT.
When I remove foot from brake at idle the rear end catches and "vibrates" or grinds, this happens on take off sometimes too. Also when turning wheel to right in either reverse or forward ( at lo speed ) I get the same grind/ vibration although there is no noise that I can perceive.
I took it to the dealership and was quoted 1000 bucks for rear diff clutches. Do you think I should try changing the fluid first ?
They never mentioned doing that fluid change while looking at it and I only learned that reading these posts. I looked at the receipt and there was no mention of rear diff fluids either. Only that they found a vibration.
I thought that was wierd. Anyways as alwys, if I can do this myself I would rather.
My brother is going to Iraq in a few weeks and I want to drive to see him in Idaho so I need to get this done soon. If you see this please write me back.
thanks,
Doug
1st question, where he talks about replacing the rear diff clutches, does that mean you have the Trac-Lock limited slip rear? Does he just want to replace the LS clutches? Replacing the clutches in a trac-lock isn't that difficult if you want to do it yourself, and the parts should be less than or near $100.
If it is an issue with the LS clutches, then a simple gear fluid change with the appropriate friction modifier may be all that is needed. Who knows, you might just need to add the friction modifier to the existing fluid.
When my clutches have worn out, it has never resulted in a vibration. The LS just stopped working and started acting like a normal open diff. Your symptoms sound to me more like a bearing issue, whether it's in the u-joints on the driveshaft or the pinion bearing or another bearing in the diff/axle. From the limited description of the proposed work, I'm not sure if he's proposing replacing any of these bearings or exactly what he's proposing to do.
1st thing I'd find out is exactly what he wants to replace.
