Front End Noise
I have a 2003 Explorer Sport XLT 4X4 with 62,0000 miles on it. I just replaced all the rotors and pads. I had 1 Caliper Carrier Bolt fall out a lock up the front passenger wheel by wedging inside the rim momentarily. All is fixed and lesson learned on double checking bolts. I believe I grabbed an adjacent bolt that was already tight and thought I was ok.
That all said and done I am over sensitive to front end noise. I am getting something between a rattle and a clunk when going over bumps. I check my wheel bearings and Ball joints and they seem ok. I am going to have some friends double check them tomorrow.
I notice my front diff pinion seal leaking. The front driveshaft has very excessive play in it from a rotational standpoint. Could this be the noise I am hearing? The U-Joints are fine, the slop seems to be in the front diff. My 4 wheel drive system is the one that the front diff is always rotating and is engaged from a dash switch to the transfer case - NO auto hubs. How much play should there be and could this cause the noise I am hearing??? Thanks.
