I've got an 05 f250 xlt, when I puchased it I assumed it would have outside thermometer, my 150 did and I miss it. Is there a module that I can plug in and it will show up on the dash or something? The ones you get from radio shack are junk and not very accurate. I would like to get an OEM one if at all possible, or the next best thing. Anybody have any suggestions?
I wanted one also but SuperDuty's rarely came with one unless you got the Lariet package whigh put it in the overhead console.
So I picked up a Gentex mirror off E-Bay which gave me an auto diming mirror (also rare on SuperDuty's) as well as a compass and outside temp. I then picked up a temp sensor off E-Bay, then installed the stuff and wired it. The mirror and sensor came from GMT800 products (Silverado,Tahoe,Escalade,Denali, etc) as GM puts auto dim/temp mirrors in everything and mounting the mirror was as simple as taking the Ford mirror off and snapping the GM mirror on. Wiring consisted of three wires; two are power and the third is the signal wire from the temp sensor. The mirror from E-Bay came with enough of a harness to get the splice point above the headliner trim. A little searching showed that Ford mounts the temp sensor on the SuperDuty near the center of the grille so I did the same and ran the wire back inside the cab. On the SuperDuty Ford provides four "pass through" wires from the engine compartment to the cab to allow upfitters to add stuff without punching a hole in the firewall for wiring.
In the '05 and up it is in the message centre where the odometer is. On the XLT you have the mini message centre like me and that does not show temp or compass. As a previous poster stated, it is Lariat and up models (FX4 as well probably) that have this option. It is not in the overhead console in the '05 and up trucks and not an easy change for the OEM version.
Many of us have opted for the OlBird's overhead console retrofit which gives us the compass and outside temperature. Great add-on to your truck and you get the overhead console to boot. If you do a search here, you will find lots of info on this. Just search overhead console and you will get plenty of info on the product and the install.
