I'm losing about a half a cup of power steering fluid (psf) a day in my 7.3L F250. I'm getting a big stain on the driveway and can always find a fresh puddle under the truck when i go out to take a drive; it is always on the driver's side under the ps pump. can you give me some suggestions on how to fix this leak? is there a compound or a stop leak additive for psf, or is replacing all the lines the best idea?
really, the last thing that i need to do with diesel so high is pour more money into fixing all the minors... It's the price you pay when you can't afford to buy a new one...
If its leaking that much, than you can probably track it down fairly easily. I had this happen twice with my truck, and in both cases it was a 5 minute repair (low pressure hose was leaking).
Get a good bright light, start up the truck and have a look under there, it shouldn't be too hard to find where the leak is coming from. If everything is already soaked, that clean it off the best you can even with a rag - anything - just enough that you can easily identify the fresh trail of fliud and follow it back to the source.
I cannot and would never recomend a leak stop additive, I never use them so I can't tell you what might work.
The pressure out line is usually against the inner fender well.
There is also an O ring on the pressure out line, that may be leaking because of the line rubbing against the fender well.
i just replaced my pump the other weekend, i replaced it becuase the housing had a crack in it near the cap, which i thought was no real biggie till you turn the wheels when putting on brakes without the engine running and it leaked out the crack (finally found my intermentent leak ) but when i was replacing it the low pressure side hose had two spots in it where it about wore thru. definately check that hose. and like the others said that dang o-ring too. i replaced my pump and all hoses and the new high pressure hose doesnt use that o-ring anymore, had a different fitting. got that hose at napa for 17 bucks i think.
