I would shoot it, but...

After wiring the 302 in my Bronco's ignition, I was cranking it over, trying to start it. It was turning over smoothly, but slow. It wasn't starting, so I checked the timing at the distrubutor. It was a little off, which I verified by pulling the passenger valve cover. I loosened the distributor and turned it clockwise about 30 degrees, maybe more to line the rotor up with the #1 terminal on the cap. I could see that both valves on the #1 cylinder were closed, so I closed the engine up, tightened the distributor down. I then went and turned the key. The engine turned maybe two revolutions, then stopped. I turned the key off, then went and tried to crank the engine over by hand. I couldn't go forward, but it turned backward almost half a turn before it stopped again. What happened? I didn't change anything except the distributor! Help!
