9 foot flatbeds ?

I can't remember if I asked this before, but: Does anyone have an exploded diagram of the 9 foot flatbeds of the 1940's/50's? (are they different between 48-52 and 53-56)I have one that is beyond repair, for the most part, but the back crosspiece with the Ford script is decent. I'd like to re-create the flatbed and would like dimensions. It's currently still mounted on my IH, and will attempt to remove it this summer. It'll probably crumble/bend in the process, so my hopes are someone has the specs, so I don't have to lie on my back and get rust in my face, lol.

Truthfully, my plan is to get the specs, cut the back crosspiece off, store it, and toss the rest. TIA

Scott,

I am in the process of drawing the 9ft flatbed on my F-4, I've been working on it for the last two years, you know how that works. Anyway, when you get to the point let me know, I'll send over what I have so far. It's on my shop computer but I won't be albe to do anything with it until the next week.

Stu, that's a good start. The PO of the IH mounted the bed with some vertical steel plates and wood blocks to compensate the upward curve of the frame. To the best of my knowledge, these beds lay pretty flat on the Ford frames. So I'm guesstimating mine isn't in its stock form. If it ever stops snowing up here, I'll get out the camera and take some pics. I'll probably get out the caliper and measure the channels, bed strips, wood, etc... Would like something to compare it to. Perhaps Bob and I can compare notes as well.

Here's another. See if this helps on the bed boards and strips. Stu

Hey! For what it's worth, my '55 F250 with 8ft platform/stakes sits on 2" x 2" wood blocks that run along the top of the frame and have been angle cut to compensate for the frame kick-ups. On top of those sits a 2" x 5.5" that runs full length under the platform bed and is held down with bolts, via "L" brackets. Otherwise, the bed looks like those in the illustrations. I only presume that mine is patterned after the orginals as it looks like the 2 x 2's are replacements.

Scott,

The bed I have on my F-4 is almost in perfect condition with just two minor rust outs and a couple of small dings. I also have every single piece of hardware for the side rack. I bought it from a guy in Black River Falls about four years ago for $200. I couldn't believe it had all of the hardware because the wood was so badly rotted. As we we were taking it apart to load onto a trailer the wood was turning into piles of dust. The guy I got it from had it mounted on a '57 C***y.

I am doing a detailed drawing of it, exact measurements of lengths, guage of metal and angles. I have it about 75% finished. I am doing it in AutoCAD so I can print it in either DWG or jpg format. The drawing will have every beam, board, clamp, and gusset listed.

On the larger beds only the top wood and the runners that run the length of the bed are wood. Also, the larger beds' side racks are made of metal uprights and wood. The smaller beds' uprights are make of only wood:

Ya know, that's a neat idea. I hadn't thought of that, thanks.
