So I'd probably wanna tone down the horses and build it for low end torque? Lookin' at a trailer right now that's 7170 lb dry.
Absolutely! Install a higher torque cam, and intake. You don't want a high revving motor, keep the rpms lower! No sense in being at 5k or higher rpm's when you are towing. You want the motor to last a long time so I'd build a torque motor instead of a very high revving hp motor! This will also help the tranny so it's not dropping gears at every little hill trying to make more power! The next key is gearing, if you have 4 spd. OD trans you could go 4.10's, but if you are running a 3 spd. auto I'd go with 3.73's. If you are going to larger tires you will have to go to 4.30 or 4.56 gears...
a decent sized I6 will make more low end power than a similar sized v8.the one thing i luv about my 300 tho is that no bibg block will take the abuse of the 300,the M5od tranny........different story

Sorry, I might be remembering wrong, but I believe the block I found was a D0VE-A, but it sat at $100 without a bidder. Although it wasn't too clean and was strictly the block.
Yes, I was plannin' on 4:10's with a 4 speed NP235.
And I like the 300 and all, but all I'm interested in is the 429/460
A 6 cyl eng will generally generate more torque than an 8 cyl of the same displacement due to the larger cylinder volume (more air & fuel) and the larger surface area on top of the piston for the cylinder pressure to act upon. The downside is that the 6 cyl needs to have heavier duty components which are heavier and prevent the engine from revving as high as an 8cyl and as a result they make less Hp.
I never said a thing about a 6cyl and a v8 of the same displacement. What im talking about is the people that tell me their stock 300 6 cyl will outpull my built 460.
no a 300 wont pull a 460,i beleive ive heard that u give the 300 a little bolt on power and it can match the 460 in low end torque, but a 300 wont pull a 460.unless the driver is a *******

yeah, that won't happen. i think the 300 is one of the best engines of all time, but it don't have enough grunt to out pull a 460 let alone one with goodies.
there is a guy on here that i read about that put a turbo on a 300. now that would have a chance, depending on boost.
Ya, I read about that turbo'd 300 too. Pretty sweet.
Sooo, I've decided the the 460 build is gonna be too tight for my budget and time allotment for this year. Especially since I've never built an engine before, and wanna take my time on it. I still plan on using a 460 for now and build another one for the truck later. So, raising another question:
How would a stock 460 feel about pullin' 8000-9000 lbs? Estimating that as my loaded weight.
OR
What would I need to do in order to comfortably pull 8000-9000 lbs?
A stock 460 will do the job,it wont be no run away.Ive pulled my camper 14,900 empty probably around 16,000 with all my crap with a stock 460.This one was in a 78 f250 Camper Special. If you can find you a decent running motor theres a few things you can do to it without breaking the bank.IMO an rv cam is a must,Cevite cams are cheap, ive used a few and never had a problem.Early 429/460 timing set,but you have to watch how your cam is ground. Some aftermarket cams have the advance already built in.Stock Duraspark Distributor is great, its all ive ever used even on racing engines, but they can be recurved for your application.4 barrel intake, square bore, cast iron is good for now or if you can afford a good one it can always go on your new motor later.Headers are good they dont have to go on now can be done later.A 4.10 or lower gear can make up for alot of missing power.Use a good carb,if it says Motocraft on it throw it as far as you can.
a stock 460 should pull that weight, hell i pull 10,000lbs with my little 5.4 with no problems. just make sure you have a good brake controller. the 4.10 gears will help alot
I had a 460 in my 350 with a stock C-6 and a US Gear underdrive and towed eveything up to 20,000 without an issue. Never got hot, still had to watch my speed untill I hit 10.000. Check around somewhere I know is someone who can put the numbers in and give you the ideal carb cfm for what you want to do. Remember everyone has an opinion and they all have their good points but you need to do what makes you happy and gets it done.
Well all looks good for my plans thus far. Guess in a few months here I'll be pickin' up the pickup and seeing what's gotta get done. Guess I'll throw a new thread up here when the time comes to working out the details.
I think that you will find that a 460 with very few after market parts will produce all the power you will need. The RV cam I used will bring the peak torque down to the lower rpms where you need them and the 650 carb was small enough so you can still afford to drive it. I pulled a 27 ft 5ver with a 17.5 ft boat and never ran out of petal. The truck would still smoke the tires through 2nd gear with 4.10 gears and stock tires .
Remember back when Dodge cam out with their V10, a guy with one egged me on until I raced him on the street. He wasn't near as proud of his V10 after I smoked his butt .
