I would like my truck to have a little more power and a more aggressive sound. Would that be accomplished if I put in a different cam? If so what type of cam would work good? I'm not worried about loosing gas mileage although I still need to pass an emissions test. I like to do all the work on my truck myself so is this somthing that I could do if I took my time?
That engine is speed density, which means that the computer does not correct for increased air flow. If you had a mass air setup, the computer would sense the increased air flow and adjust the fuel mixture. You can change the cam, but not too wild. If you are just looking to "wake up" that motor, try a few simple things first. Headers, high flow cat, performance exhaust, electric fan, msd ignition, high flow air filter. Those mods should net you more usable HP and not mess up your computer. If you do go with the cam you should change over to Mass Air, and while you are changing the cam, might as well change the heads (and port and polish the heads). Now that would really wake up that 302. Check with the general performance forum, there are a few guys that can get you a cam that would work with speed density.
Thanks for the info. I already have a K&N filter, a throttle body spacer, and performance exhaust. I think that I will try headers and see if that gives me more power.
