cam vs California

just got my truck smogged not to long ago in california. it passes with ease. but i have been cintemplating a cam upgrade, i have the stock cam in it now. so what is the stock cam numbers for a 77 460? i have put headers and dual 40 series flowmasters that exit before the wheels, edelbrock cam and holley carb. msd 6a ignition, blaster coil, open element air cleaner. i am guessing that with all that i have done i probably have close to 300 hp and like 400 ft lbs? does that sound reasonable, or do i have more power? but i am going to be doing a lot of work to my truck this summer, and i would like even more power out of it. i am hoping that i can get a cam that will beat the sniffer test but still make a lot of power. any ideas? whats the best cam toi get? i have heard that changing the timing chain will gain more power but i think that would hurt emissions and i have heard stories about it making the truck run worse....

You're in a very unusual position in seeking more power while attempting to appease the CA smog *****. The timing gear on your '77 was purposefully retarded to reduce emissions (and power). Advancing it to a straight-up assembly will improve power, but at the same time increase emissions. I'd suggest talking to some of the cam grinders and getting their recommendations for your particular situation.

As far as stock specs for the cam, I found this web site http://www.clevite.com/motorhead/tec...ecs/ford.html. My Ford service manual lists the cam lift as .274" and .278", so I think the data for the 460 on this website is accurate.

Question: Are you saying that your truck passed the smog test with the stock cam or the Edelbrock cam?

thanks, pager

I show the '72-78 CA 460 as .443/.424, non-CA .443/.486.

As a contrast, the CJ was .506/.506.

Sorry guys. I screwed up on those numbers. I don't know how I came up with those numbers. Anyways, the information I was trying to present was from an 87 manual. I didn't notice that you were looking for the numbers for a 77.
