well it has been a couple of days since i have written back. I wanted to let you guys know what my explorer has been up to. Well we took it to ford for service and the problem ended up being the fuel filter at least thats what they are saying at this present time. since we took it there and the fuel filter has been changed. I will say that is seems like a different vehicle. It has more power now and when you put your toe on the gas pedal the explorer responds nicely. The only thing that i hope is that this new fuel filter is not masking a problem . But this may just be my sometimes negative self coming out. But i am beliving that things are better hopefully fixed.
to be honest i never changed it before the other day. When i bought the vehicle it had 38000 miles on it and it was a security vehicle so there is no telling how long it had idled with the out the wheels rolling to increase the odometer. so I dont know. When i purchased it . It rran really nice. Then i started finding out all of the info about the explorers and starting regretting buying it. It has been a good vehicle but they arent the same fords that they used to be. anyhow enough of me drifting off. when they took the filter off they said that it was extremely clogged and grungy. there is possible speculation that it might be original. but since i have had that filter done it is running very nice. RPMS are maintaining at 600 at idle on stop signs. it hasnt sputtered or stalled once. so hopefully i have found my gremlin.
A fuel filter problem will show up as no power when you floor it or go up a hill at first. If you have that even then the engine should idle fine.. It takes a solidly clogged filter to cause an engine not to idle correctly and if it won't idle right because of a clogged filter the car shouldn't be able to go down the street at all because of lack of fuel. So to simplify if you floor it and it pulls hard and rev's good the fuel filter is prob not clogged. Just thought I would throw this out there for folks to use when diagnoising fuel issue's.
well then maybe its not fixed. I dont know. I guess time will tell. I hope that it is fixed. I wish that things were simple. i dont see the reason to make vehicles so darn complicated. I know that its probably all for economy and such. but vehicles years ago used to be cut and dry. not anymore.
Hey Rob: I have a '03 Ex XLT with the 4.6 and had a similar problem. Cleaning the air filter worked for a while, however replacing the air filter was the real fix. Air filters tend to be alot cheaper than sensor replacement.
but after taking it out and cleaning it, when I was putting it back, I noticed that a metal pipe leading to the air inlet had come disconnected. I reconnected that and it's running like a charm. I have to blame jiffy lube for this. I told them to change the oil and I'd do the air filter because I had one already and they 'forgot' that and tried to charge me for a new one. I made them take their's back out and I'm sure they were kinda ruff with it when they did. Mine was only running rough when you first started it and it tried to stall out until you gave it gas. Anyway, my .02!!
well i am back. its been about a month and a half with no problems. Today the wife called me and told me that it was acting up again. She said that it was idleing eratically and that when she was at the stop light the rpm gauge was moving around and when she stepped on the gas she had it floored and the motor did not respond until she floored it and then it went. She then pulled into a gas station. beacuse the gauge was down to e. she put some gas in it and things were fine. at this current moment. Is it possible that it was just low on gas? I know that this explorer is a duel fuel vehicle but just wondering would the fact that ethanol is getting added to the fuel now would that be a problem? Then i was also wondering if the intake needs cleaned. We bought it with 38000 miles on it and it has 78000 miles on it would that possibly be a cause or what could it be. I am thinking of taking it to ford if things dont resolve. but i hate to give those bank account robbers my hard earned money if i can do it myself. any and all help is appreciated . thanks

Does anybody know about cleaning the throttle plate????
This is basic maintenance, just like changing the oil.
Twice a year will keep it running like new.
All these posts and nobody has a clue.
