truck stalls

truck stalls

<HR style="COLOR: #666666" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->I have an 02 7.3 F350, with 48,000 miles. Last night driving home the engine light came on and the truck stalled. I put it in park and it fired up fine. Put it in drive and went about a 100 yds and it stalled again. Did this all the way home. I tried it the next day. The truck will idle fine all day long and will run till it warms up, but then the engine light comes on and stalls. Hoping it's a warrenty issue but don't trust dealers one iota, Help???

u using a DFA to prevent gelling? Cold climates require it.

I plug it in when it gets below freezing but we've been up in the 40's lately and it's been running fine. It starts with no problem and will idle fine. It's when I exelerate that it dies and only after it warms up.

When it stalls and you crank it to restart, does the tach show any movement?
If not, that is a sure sign of a CPS that has gone south.

The tach acts normal. I've been reading all day and came across accelerator position sensor. It says that engine will operate at low idle only, which it does, but will die on exeleration, which it does. I had this sensor replaced on a factory recall... I have the adjustible pedals... am I onto something???

Well, if your tach is showing rpm's when starting, it's definately not your CPS. Your adjustable pedal shouldn't have anything to do with your TPS, but it sounds as if you need to get your truck scanned for codes. If you find a P0122 or P0123, then you have it nailed as a TPS related problem.

I dont know to much on these PSD's but the cummins i work on have a throttle position sensor, and when they go bad it tells the computer theres somthing wrong and reduces engine power. Like your situation it will idle all day long, but when you step in it theres no power. Scan for codes and go from there.

On your year of truck, probably not. I know a few trucks that do. The computer measures how much pressure is needed to push fuel threw the filter and if it gels up(fuel pump needing more pressure to pump fuel threw the filter), the check engine/engine warning light comes on.

Ide check for codes first, if you dont have a scan tool check your local auto parts store like autozone. They should scan it for free, write down what codes are there and get back here.

Well the verdicts in. Just picked the truck up and it was the cmp as the dealership calls it or cps as refered to so much here. Thanks for all the input, it made the whole process go alot easier. First time on this site and I found it very useful. Thanks again.

Not to butt in, but I've recently read somewhere that using the tach to help diagnose a bad cam sensor, applies only to earlier models...I'm not sure what year it changed, but I'm thinking '02 time frame?? So up to '02 you could use the tach to help troubleshoot a cam sensor issue, but after that it no longer works because the tach keeps working as usual. Anyone know anything more about this? Again, I'm not sure of the cutoff year...or the validity of this at all for that matter.
