No that means that it prob is the IAC... If it rev's then that show's that the IAC isn't doing its job. If the engine didn't rev when you gave it gas then you would have had another issue...Hope that clears it up.

Got the new IAC installed this evening. Went for a drive and it ran great coming up to stop signs, no stalling or variation in the tach. After a few more miles at a stop I shut vehicle off and re-started. RPM did go down below 500 but did not stall. Ran great the rest of the way home. Shut it off in garage restarted and acted as if it was going to stall but did not. Not sure if changing out the IAC did any good or not?

You may need to disconnect battery for a couple of mins to let the computer relearn you installed a new part..Then it may take driving awhile to get it right..

I had the battery unhooked during the install. Wife is off for springbreak this week. She's not driving much, should have a chance to put a few miles on it this weekend. Thanks

I had a different vehicle that did the same thing when at stop lights or signs. I learned to keep my left foot on the brake and my right foot just barely on the gas. I did it for so long, that's the only way I know how to drive now, with both feet. Anyway, the problem turned out to be my timing belt. Your issue could be the same thing?

Rob,

I have been having the same problem with mine. It will drop down below 500 rpms and then stall. Only on occassion. I took mine up to the autozone. They scanned it and it had no codes popping up and everything apparently is running fine. I am trying to figure mine out. I was thinking fuel filter but after reading i see that fuel filter did not correct yours. Where is The IAC at on a 4.0 liter ? what does it look like? Is that what the end result was on yours? was it the iac? I want to figure this out. Why cant they just keep things simple.

The Idle Air Control(IAC) is located on your air intake to the motor. Mine was solid aluminum and was mounted with two bolts and a plug harness attached to it. My wifes explorer is still running great, knock on wood! I purchased mine from Napa for $76 otd. Good luck and keep us posted as to your results.

I still can find my IAC. I purchased an aftermarket IAC today and spendt about 2 hrs looking for it on my motor and am unable to locate it. I am questioning as to if I have the wrong part. I am thinking about taking it back to the autoparts store and then going to ford to get the one that they have and see if they are the same or not. I cant find a haynes manual for my year explorer . The only one that they have is 02-03 not 04. Which is really agrivating. If any one has some advice please let me know. I am thinking 5 gallons of Gas and a match. This is a prime reason why i love my 1991 f-150. simple and a great truck with 280000 miles on it. not a problem with it. I would appreciate any and all help
thanks

Is your 04 Drive by wire? In other words no accell cable. Then you will have no IAC. I know my 05 is like this...

I dont see a throttle cable or anything . I am starting to wonder as to if I might have and Electronic throttle body. If i do and I dont have an IAC then. What could be causing me to stall ocassionally. If there is no IAC then it must be something else then. I am not having any codes popping up . no service engine soon no nothing. It just ocassionally stalls. Could it then be something as simple as fuel filter? I would think that if it is a Throttle positioning sensor or another type of sensor it would throw the check engine light on. I would also think that if it was my spark plugs then it would throw a cylinder misfire code. And if i cant get any codes to pop up then taking it to ford would be wasting my money probably. Any ideas?
thanks

Not a fuel filter.. Could be the sensor at the pedal. Codes will only be set if you do certain parameters and cycles of running. Don't expect codes . If they happen then thats great but sometimes not.I would get a scanner to look at the pedal potentiometer to see if it is linear. You can check with a DVM also.
