Does anyone know if there is any reason why a spin on cartridge type filter could not be installed in one of the cooling lines on an 05 Escape? It seems silly to me for Ford to not have a user serviceable transmission filter. I change the AFT regularly but it "goes against the grain" to not be able to change the filter too.
Another possibility-there are aftermarket vendors (and I think Ford/Motorcraft) that offer an inline trans filter that can be installed by cutting it into one of the cooler lines. This might be easier than trying to find a location for a remote filter mount, etc. Just a thought. I agree, the idea of no filter, or lifetime filter does not seem right.
Thats what I had in mind and I do believe that I will look into the possibility. I keep vehicles for a long time. I have 189,000 miles on my Ranger and its running strong. I am setting a goal of 300,000 on the Ranger. I probably wont see that many miles on our Escape but I am going to try. In order to run a vehicle that long, you have to take care of it.
Dan Robertson, the part number you need is "XC3Z-7B155-BA". It is available at the Ford garage parts counter. Get about 12 inches of transmission fluid hose at the same time. On the drivers side front of your Escape take the plastic splash shield down and cut the line coming from the front of the transmission and install the filter with some clamps, this is the line going to the cooler. It looks like an old school fuel filter. I have put these on my 2001 and 2006 Escapes with no problems. Good luck!
The only problem with this route is anytime you do anything to the transmission you need to make sure this transmission filter isn't plugged up. Also if you ever need to have transmission work done to it, make sure you tell whoever does the work about this filter.
I had a friend once with an old K5 Blazer that the transmission burned up on. He spent almost two grand on having it rebuilt. Got it back from the shop and it worked great for two days.
They rebuilt it again (under warranty).. he got it back again and it failed a third time a couple of days later.
Come to find out, someone had at one time installed an inline transmission filter and it was plugged solid. He had a heck of a time getting them to do it again! (Ended up having to get a lawyer involved).
Just make sure that you don't forget that it's installed, is all.
