read this whole thread, and in my opinion there is nothing extreme about a ttb axle, while the off road guys were "excited" about it for off road racing. Thats about it, you can get them to be a long travel suspension, for a desert racing type of aplication, but for rocks, or mud, or anything similar, bye bye ttb. Honestly, i think i effed mine up with 33" bfg, ON A COUCH!!!! Random snapping sound is not a good sign. Havent had a chance to check it out but it dont sound pretty.
on a couch lol, now thats a good one. Even for desert racing, alot has to be done to them to make them work right. They convert the steering over to that fancy smancy double idler arm stuff so that the toe doesn't change drastically with travel, and all kinds of beefing up ect.
only read the first page, but TTB axles suck.
When properly built they can be used for desert baja stuff, but that's all I've heard them to be good for (OR a stock truck).
Once you lift a TTB truck, the alignment is near impossible to get right, and frames are constatly cracking from the stress of dropped pivot brackets.
They have their place though...
Also, FYI Biggest TTB is a D50 which isn't stronger than a stock solid axle D44.
And.... TTBs were in F350s until 1985.5. No dana 60s in 83.
Also, unless the engine was swapped it(which is very possible), from the factory Ford did not offer a 460 in a 4x4 until about 86 also.

Matt,
I agree with everything you said except I think 460s were first available in either 83 or 84 (99% sure 83) not 86.

I knew they never had 460s in 4x4s in the 70s, and didn't remember what year in the 80s they started, so I said about 86... you're probably right abou 83.
