I have a 2004 Excursion that is not producing the MPG that others are claiming and want to ask what may be the issue?
On a 550 mile interstate trip I was getting 16.7 while running at 70 mph. When towing my 8,500 lbs. trailer on the open road I average 12.7. Both appear to be a bit lower than others clain.
So far the truck is stock. I accept the fact that reduced exhaust back pressure will help but would like to know what othrs had when completely stock and what each mode may have produced.
There are alot of issues that can have impact on fuel mileage. How heavy your foot in the throttle is probably the biggest. Dirty fuel filter can have a significant impact. Winter fuel mixtures in some regions will lower your mileage. Of course the terrain in which you are traveling and weather conditions are huge factors.
There are plenty of mods a guy can do to get better mileage. Air intake, exhaust and a chip.
I dont know much on the 6.0, but I know my chip makes the mileage improve by at least 2 mpgs.
I agree with everything mentioned above, all will affect mileage in one way or another. I have been told that the intake on the 6.0's is sufficient, so a modification in that area isn't necessary, unlike the 7.3's, which is what I have. Installing a 4" exhaust will help, and a chip will help too. On my 02, I installed a 4" magnaflow exhaust, with a muffler, and did the 6637 mod and increased my mileage buy 2 mpg. It went from 15 to 17mpg. Next step is a chip in the near future. I would say some guys and dolls will chime in here with their 6.0's and head you in the right direction on what to do to help you out.
I replaced the factory air filter with a brand new one. I did the zoo-dad mod and I cut out the muffler. I run my tires at 70 psi. That's what I have done to get 18-21 on the highway. Your towing numbers look great at 12, I have gotten as low a 7mpgs towing! I run 82 mph and my 6.0 Ex get 20.1 going that sped on the flats....... I'd cut out the muffler, get yourself a new clean air filter and open up the air intake with the zoo-dad mod all that will help!

It's YOUR RIGHT FOOT. Fix that and the rest will follow. Keep it below 2K RPM and keep your turbo boost less than 10 and you'll see the difference. You would get anywhere, but you'll have a few extra bucks in your pocket. Best of luck !

Yes I am quite satisfied with the towing milage but was quite surprised at how little difference there was while not towing.
What is the zoo dad mod? I did a search but did not find anything.

Several have commented on the size of my foot. I forgot to mention that most of the trip was using cruise control which should have produced the best possible mileage relating to throttle position. The trip was from Jersey to Ohio across the Pa turn pike. West bound is up hill and I was getting 16. The east bound trip, and down hill was giving 17. So the hills were a factor but still I would have expected a greater difference than when towing and not using
cruise control
First...internet mpg's are just that and your results may vary.
Second...are you hand calculating or relying on the on-board readout?
Third...don't base your results on one tank...too many variables come into play
Forth...do you have a 4x4 and if so...are you sure you don't have a stuck locked hub?
Fifth...many change tire diameters and don't re-cal the speedo...this will mess up the on-board calculations as well as HAND CALCULATIONS since the odometer is messed up...
Lastly...winter blends and tire pressures do play havoc with mpgs
Our computers should be able to compensate up to a 35" dia tire with a reset on it. But the larger and wider tire will cost you at the pump. Alos any kind of lift. The higher the more air that is strapped underneather causing friction. Chips help if you dont get on them. Ask some of these guys what happens to their diesel when they punch the 140smoke chip from DP. I bet they can see the gauage move. But exahust, air filter and chip will help with mileage.
