I am currently working on a '76 Ford Granada (European version) and looking for a new drivetrain.
I have two options:
a 2.9 cologne with A4Ld or a 4.0 with 5r55
I know the A4ld will fit without too much hassle. But I'd rather have the 4.0.
I understand that the 5r55 has different dimensions from the a4ld, so my question is:
Where and how much is the 5r55 higher/ longer than the a4ld.
My plan was to have a 5 speed auto without too much effort.
I found two donors: a mercury with 2.9 and a4ld, of which I know will fit, and a Aerostar with a 4.0 and 5r55. From this I know that the engine will fit, but I don't know for sure what the difference is in outer hight and width between the a4ld and the 5r55.
The donors are not quite near, so for me it would be best to know if the 5r55 will fit, or how much higher or wider it is than the a4ld to know if a few modifications will be sufficient. If the 5r55 fits, I'll go for the Aerostar, if not, the Mercury will be giving it's heart.
Thanks for your reply!

I do not think they put the 5r55 into an Aerostar in the USA, so you might be waiting on that answer for a while. You might want to ask in the Explorer forum (97+) or the Ranger forum for someone to measure one for you.
Thanks for your replies!
I found out that the a4ld and 5r55 both fit, but it has to be a 2wd. Otherwise the easy in and out plan will not work, because of a lot of work on removing the transfer case etc..
So thanks again, and I'll be searching for a 2wd ranger, explorer, aerostar with a 4.0 and 5r55!
Yes! I'm looking for the complete package!
When I find one, I'll let it know througt a reply.
Might take some time, as I live in the Netherlands, and in Europe they are harder to find than in the US...
