Turbo "cough" problem...

Hi, wanted to start a new thread on this since the one below was stale and getting off topic.

I've been dealing with the problem for a while now and wanted to hear from others who've dealt with the problem.

I get a intermitent "coughing" noise when pulling my travel trailer, mostly under load like going up a hill. My boost guage shows the boost drop WAY off during the cough, and the truck loses power during the cough.

I hadn't heard of anyone having this problem until I saw the thread below called "Does your turbo do this?" and saw the guys Youtube video. Exact same scenario as me, pulling a trailer, and the exact same coughing sound and power loss.

Sure would love to hear from others who've had the problem and what the resolution was before I go yanking the turbo off.

Thanks!
TX

have you tried it with the banks unhooked once? I had the same issues as you and the issue was even more notisable with the tuner in. turned out to be the turbo needed to be cleaned and the exhaust vanes were chipped up.

Well, it actually did it before I installed the Banks, and still does it, so the tuner doesn't seem to be the issue.

I'm hearing more that it might be a clogged EGR?

possible,(anything is on these trucks) have you tried unplugging it and driving it once? It only takes about an hour to pull and clean.

After hearing (and seeing the pics) of the clogged EGRs, I'm yanking it tomorrow to clean it. I'll be pulling the travel trailer again weekend after next, so I'll be able to see if it solves the problem. I can never make it do it with the truck alone.

I hope cleaning your EGR will help, but it may be that the Turbo needs cleaning.

Also the VGT actuator may be bad.

Thanks guys. I think I'll start at the lowest price item (EGR cleaning) and work my way up.

I'll be pulling the travel trailer weekend after this, so if it still does it after cleaning the EGR, I may unplug the EGR temporarily on the trip to see if still does it. If it does, then I'll move on to the turbo.
