Not to hi-jack this post, but a few people have said that a 99-04 V10 should take 6 quarts of oil. If I put only 6 quarts in my 02, it bearly even shows up on the dip stick. If I put in 7 quarts, it fills it right up to the full dot on the dip stick.
So is the dip stick wrong?
Interesting...as the oil dip stick does not have a "FULL" line so to speak. It should have a "MIN" and a "MAX". The correct level is when the oil is anywhere between those lines.
Mine usually is right in the middle after an oil change. I use 6qts of Motorcraft 5w20 and MC FL-820s oil filter.
If you were closer...I would be happy to lend out my oil dip stick to see if mine would read different.
5w-20 is to thin for a 2002. If you use it you will hear the valve train tapping. The newer 3v engines use the 5w-20. Stick to the 5w-30 synthetic.

5w20 safely replaces all 5w30 requirements on all modular V8s-V10s according to Ford. Most Ford dealers now carry 5w20 in bulk since it will superscede the 5w30. 5w20 is the best choice for a modular engine. I used to have a chart showing which engines could use 5w20 but I can't seem to find it now. I know it included all modular engines all the way back to 1992. Ford considers 5w20 a upgrade over 5w30.
I'm using Rotella 5w40 synthetic in everything around here. Oils for gasoline engines have had all of the good additives removed to help curtail emissions. The diesel spec oils still have these additives, and they also have better shear load properties vs the other oils.
