Not to hi-jack this post, but a few people have said that a 99-04 V10 should take 6 quarts of oil. If I put only 6 quarts in my 02, it bearly even shows up on the dip stick. If I put in 7 quarts, it fills it right up to the full dot on the dip stick.
If my memory is right , i looked up in the 02 shop manual how much oil my 02 v10 should have and it said 6 3/4 quarts of 5w20. 6 quarts gets to the add level on the stick, 7 quarts overfills it slightly. Dont forget some oil filters are longer/ shorter than others, so that would make a difference also.

So is the dip stick wrong?
The 2002 owner's manual say 6 quarts.
This may be related to another thread. If you put in oil up to the FULL mark, does your engine use oil?
It has been suggested that maybe owners of Triton engines that use a lot of oil may have dip sticks that don't read correctly and are overfilling the engines.
There are variations in dipsticks. 6 Quarts fills my truck to the mid point on the dipstick. When you change and check oil level make shure you are on a level surface to get an accurate reading. I've been using 6 1/4 quarts just for a little cushion.

That is exactly what I have had to do for the last six years. 6 and 3/4 quarts seems to be the perfect amount in my truck.
My owners manual also says six quarts for both the 5.4 and the 6.8. I have always wondered how both engines could have the same oil capacity. Seems to me, if a V10 is a 5.4 with two more pistons; that the oil pan would be longer and have a higher capacity.
Yep... I paid about 16 bucks for mine. Any thoughts on wether or not I should keep the same filter on and dump out the Amsoil oil if I haven't even gotten half my use out of the filter yet?
Cap on my 02 2 valve v10 clearly states 5w20, but my 02 is made on what i believe on the last day of production in 02 which in my case was 06/12/02. How do I know this? I saw an 03 later on the dealers lot with a build date of 06/13/02. Also my truck came with fx4 decals and the rancho shocks, but that option was not available until 03.
5w-20 is to thin for a 2002. If you use it you will hear the valve train tapping. The newer 3v engines use the 5w-20. Stick to the 5w-30 synthetic.

Not so.
For the '99-'00 modular engines they call for 5w30. However, in '01 that changed to the 5w20. 5w20 has been recommended ever since in the modular engine line.
