hello all, new here and would appreciate the help. I have a 97 f350 7.3. recently it has been up/down shifting when i am at coasting speeds. also the cruise control works sometimes but not others. any ideals? thanks
Does the OD cancel light on the shift flash? Does the speedo jump around? Also check your brake and turn signal light bulb including the third brake light. Tap on the housings and make sure they aren't loose cutting out.
this truck has a horton service body on it, so all the tail lights are not factory. the OD light does not flash, and it seems to work properly. although after you mention this I remembered that the abs light seems to have started coming on and off at the same time the other problems started. thank you
You could have a vehicle speed sensor issue as well. Its on the rear differential. It could be a wiring issue. Check it closely you may find a broken wire.

Coasting speeds? Or was this cruise speeds?
X2 with Tim.
Scan for a code would help. The OD lamp will not flash for all codes.
Most times at cruise its the TC unlocking/locking while hitting bumps.
Check brake lamp switch.
dont overlook vehicle speed too, if you are at the 3-4 shift point they can act funny up and down shifting back and forth. just throwing it into the mix. other then that i agree, scan for codes for the trans concern before going to far into it. also define "coasting speeds"
cruise sounds liek the world famous brake switch located on top of the master cylinder.
hello, and thanks for the suggestions so far. when i say coasting speed I mean when im sriving in the range where you dont really need to accelerate. this usually happens around 40-45 mph. but also at lower speeds around 25-30 when going up hill. any thoughts as to why the abs light will sometimes come on when I start the truck and stay on and sometimes it will not? thanks.
does your truck have 3.55 gears? it sounds to me just from the description now, that you are right at the shift points. will it still do this if you are doing 50- 55, or 35-40?
look on the vin sticker in the door jamb. there will be an axle code box there.
35 is 4.11 open diff
39 is 3.55 open
c5 is 4.11 limited slip
c9 is 3.55 LS
sounds like you are engaging the torgue converter and letting off. the cruise is dependent on NO signal on the brake light circuit. check your brake pedal switch. loook for ANY hot on the LOAD side.
cycling the converter will burn it up in a heart beat. e4od's are very sensitive to electrical shorts.
I had issues with my cruise and apcm when I switched to LED brake/tail lights. cruise failed, apcm failed. got two leds lighting when ignition hot..... had 9.8 volts at VERY low amps on the load side of the circuit at the brake pedal. added one filiment bulb back into the circuit-acts just like a ballast resistor- end of problem.
check your wiring, you can eat a 3k trans mission in a hurry.
