When mine went out my truck would literally fog out the yard when I would start it up every morning. Also, I couldn't rev passed 2500. It would smoke/bog down. My mpg went crazy. I was getting close to 800 total.
i got, and have always had terrible mpgs, 400 between both tanks 12mpg, and a idle that 'revs' and 'drops' by itself. it doesnt smoke much or consume any oil. maybe a little smoke at start up/warm up when its cold, but thats it.
I'm serious about the milage. Something was really messing it up. I have pictures of my o-rings. They were trashed. Same problem on the whole passenger side. Only two on the driverside that were bad.
This oring thing is just a shot in the dark for me, just thinkin........... here is the deal the truck has 62,000 miles and runs fine, no smoke, sounds perfect except at start up and idle,,,,,,,,, sometimes at start up it will hicup or miss then it will even out a bit but at a low 550 rpms with a slight drop to 500 then back up to 550........... I did the fpr screen it was black and thick , pretty much plugged the fuel filter and bowl was also nasty its clean now,,,,,,,,,,,,, long story short it still idles low and has that start up hicup......... Could this be ann O ring thing...........
jackman, my truck hickups when i start it somethimes if i have my superchip on high, but i always have a weird idle issue like you do which never goes away. do you have a programmer?
Icebox I don't know what kind of oil you use or how old your oil is but if the oil is old it will do exactly what you are saying idle up and down.just for poops and giggles try this run your truck to operating temps turn off the engine and quickly check the oil if there are bubbles on the dip stick this is your idling problem it,s happened to me several times now with good brand name diesel oil sometimes rite after a change ,if there is bubbles try defoamer in the oil you would not believe the difference it makes

Icebox, my truck is all stock even though it has low milage I don't think the previous owner did regular maintenance,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I know he ran 47,000 miles on nothing but off road diesel.........
Waljon, Ill try the bubble test tomarrow at day light,,,,,,,,,,,, I do think it improves with an oil change but only slight and very short lived......... I run Rotela T 15/40...........
dont forget these trucks dont ever purrr like kittens at idle, some small fluctations are normal. if it is excessive try unplugging the icp sensor when it is acting up, if it idles smooth that is the problem.
a quick easy way to check for bad o-rings is the fuel filter, if it looks like its oily then you have a case of the o-ring leaks, also an easier way to check is let the truck warm up, then from an idle in park or neutral smash it to the floor and hold it. if it revs right up and stays at the limiter then you are usually fine. normally with bad o-rings it will stumble around 2000-2500 and smoke pretty good then clear up quick and fast to the limiter once it hits 2500 rpm.
the offroad fuel wont hurt as long as its from a clean tank, if it sits for long periods of time it could have had algae in it, either way when i had an algae bloom in mine the idle was unaffected.
offroad fuel is the same thing as onroad, just dyed
thanks waljon and coon, im gonna check for bubbles tomorrow too. i use mobil delvac and change it every 3-4K so i think the defoamer is going to be the solution if I do have bubbles.
Ditto on the the reving. Mine wouldn't get past 2500 in gear. I wish I would have video tapped it for you guys.
I can usually get about 700 miles total during the summer. There was no way I should have been getting that good of milage checking fields and what not.
497 total miles seems low to me. I usually get 300 out of the front tank. Right now, my front is about empty and I'm at 270 something. Lots of idle time though.
