Plenty of options here, but are you sure that the trails you are wheeling on really require a locker in the front? I have run fronts with spools, and they do not turn all that bad when the traction is low, but firm hard pack is quite tough.
Detroit is the ultimate in strength, and a selectable like an ARB is a fine choice with the ability to de-select for tight turns, and plenty strong when used in a D44.
It has been my experience that a decent LS unit up front (Like a Detroit True-Trac) and a locked rear provides plenty of traction without the driveability issues of a locked front.

What size tires do you plan on running on it? A 44 isn't the strongest of axles, and if you like the skinny pedal, it could pose some strength issues with meats of any size and a locker

A detroit is a good locker, but expensive.
I went with a aussie locker in my D44 and it works great.
Turning in the mud with both hubs locked and you can't notice it.

A limited slip would be a decent way of getting both wheels to turn, and not be to harsh on the axle at the same time.

IF I had to do it again, I'd get the aussie locker again....it is a great little unit, and you can't beat the price.

yeah, i would very strongly suggest you find a D60 to swap in instead of a D44, just out of curiousity what year D44 are you using?

Ever hear of a word called "fabrication"?

Check Jeffs Bronco Graveyard for weld on C wedges for a D60.

if he wants to use d44's, why give him a hard time? he already has it, and 60's are alot harder to find.

because when, not if, he breaks the shafts hes going to spend about the same amount of money to buy Chromo 44 stuff which isnt guaranteed he wont break again.

I hate seeing people spend money foolishly.

maybe, this will help explain why 35+ tires on a d44, ttb or not is a bad idea.
