hah ok im lifting my truck cuz i can....im not going to be beating the F!@# out of the thing. does anyone else have an opinion besides MR. dana 60? or anyone else running bigger tires with a dana 44?
i will make this easy---started with 6" lift stock 96' 150---BROKE IT--put in solid 44---BROKE IT---dana 60(with coils) and sterling 10.25 and 5-6 foot of air off the top of dunes and never had a problem---dont waste time and money do it right the first time, this from someone whos been there and done that
Unless you can sell it, you're screwed, id say since you got wheel it till it breaks, all the while keep a lookout for 60, that's what i'm going to do. D44's can take some hits before they go out, a buddy's ramcharger has 38's and he jumps and does stupid sh** with it all the time, only thing he lost was a seal. just wheel it then get a 60
yea i think i might just do that cuz im not gunna be mudding with this thing everyday and this aint trucks gone wild so i think i'll be good for awhile
I say run the D44, I have run one for many years and not had a lick of trouble with it, it is open, and I run 35" tires on it. I don't beat on it either, but it has seen its share of mud and snow wheeling. One just has to know the limitations of his equipment and stay off of the razors edge. No reason to be blowing up stuff.
I have to admit that I have blown the D60 rear out of it twice though. Who said 300's don't have any torque, limited slips suck. Locker or spool in the rear if your going to be spinning the tires at all. Tree stumps are hard on limited slips.
If you drive right that D44 should last just fine.
I'd say, run teh 44 unlocked or upgrade to the 60.
One of my wheelin buddies has a 79 bronco with D44 and built 400m C6 and doubler. Every single time we go out.. he breaks and axle and was on 35's with detroits. Now he added 6-7" of lift to his already 4or6" and he plans to run a 40. because he didn't want to do a swap, he bought the chromoly axles and they were definitely not cheap! I will be pulling him out again this year I'm sure! I'm changing rig this year. sold my SD so I'll be running a 94 bronco with SAS with D44 on 37's. Front will be unlocked.
I take it easy (in some ways) on my locked D44 on 37s and it is lasting so far, but I'm just waiting on it to break.
I don't have the cash for a 78 79 D60, so I'm thinking of using some alloy usa shafts and as for u joints..... I don't know...
You can buy the shafts for $500 with spicer 760x joints, but some CTMs or Longfields will run somewhere around $300-400.
Some say the spicer joints last, and others swear on them.
I don't like taking it easy so some times I get on it expecting to break something, but I guess in mud there isn't enough traction to break (unless it's in a bind).
