I live in NE Florida and have a 1997 Powerstroke, 18 MPG. I am thinking about removing the catalytic converter, for the sake of the environment, don'tcha know.....the cat converts pollutants to carbon dioxide. Can't have that!
Now, I do not weld, so will an exhaust shop do it for me? And how many more MPG will it give? I am thinking less than one.
Look under Ford Powerstroke (on the left), then Year, then Exhaust Products, then 1994-97 Ford Powerstroke Down Pipe and Test Pipes, then Delete/Test pipes.
Well, you said that you don't have access to many tools so you might consider getting "Cat delete Pipe" and then going with your original thought of having a muffler shop install it for you using clamps not welds.
If you go this route and the shop will do it then if for some reason you want to replace the kitty the replacement will be that much easier.
How difficult is the whole process? It seems fairly simple...saw out the kitty, slide in the new pipe and clamp it down. Is that it? Surely it can't be that simple....
Even though it's more costly to get maxium effect find/buy a sawzall and get a turbo back 4" system. You'll be glad you did, besides you can never have too many tools
