having problems i have new spark plugs new wires new cap new rotor new carborator and new motor edlebrock perfomer and a 650 holley double pumper it ran fine a couple of days ago and yesterday i went out to start my truck and when i stomp it flutters but if iam goin about 30 mph and i stomp it it runs fine. also at about 55 -60 mph it cuts out or mis fires. any help is useful thanks.
Hey chevykiller, assuming you have this motor in a '79 or later, it kinda sounds like your brain box might be going out. If this is a new motor, check your timing again to be sure its on the money because after you run it for a little while everything starts to break in. well, just some thoughts i hope to help. Good luck, Rob
I'm not going to pretend to know what's going on with that engine but I'm wondering where you bought it from. At first the symptoms sounded like the carb was set too rich but this other stuff sounds like something internal. Good Luck.
For what it's worth, check the crankcase ventalation(sorry 'bout the spellin') system, if the pcv valve is stuck it will vent wherever it can, the breathers, the rings and or seals, especially on a fresh motor(rings not seated yet).
Hey chevykiller, that don't sound good, are you sure this is a new motor? I agree with chuck P. about the PCV system, i'd surely check that. Have you removed that valve cover? You could have a bent or broken push rod, causing the oil to shoot past the oil deflector in the valve cover? That whining sound could be a bad rocker? I'm not real sure, but its just some thoughts. Keep us posted and good luck. Rob
LAST EDITED ON 18-Jul-00 AT 08:21 PM (EST)[p]thank you guys for your help it sounds like the wineing noise is gone, the reason the oil was leaking out of the cap is because a bad gasket on the oil filler cap. i still havent figured out why it flutters when i get on it but i think its maybe running to rich but that's whats weird it was running fine a couple of days ago and this flutter started i don't get it also i can put my hand on the exhaust pipe and i get a wet black suit on my hand when i rev it.
No offense to you Holley guys, but the one I had on my truck you couldn't keep the float adjusted. You could adjust it then it would run fine, couple of weeks later it would be flooding ou and so on (yes the lock nut was tight). If you want better gas mileage and less tinkering buy an Edelbroch or Carter. On the flip side if you want more precision tunability and more all out power stick with the Holley. I run a Edel on my 79 F250 4x4 and a Holley on my 85 Mustang 5.0.

I think at this point you would want to pull the plugs. If it has been running rich with blowby, it's possible that the plugs are fouled badly. This will create problems like you have now(heavy soot from exhaust), I agree with the above post, the Holley carb is a fickle thing, if you can get it dialed in, they are great, however, I've always had problems keeping it there. A double pumper may be squirting to much fuel from the acc. pumps when stomped and causing the plugs to foul(along with the blowby). Also keep an eye on the condition of the oil, when running like this , it has the potential to contaminate the oil quickly and this is not a good thing in a fresh motor-oil and filters are cheap compared to a rebuilt engine. Try to change only one thing at a time, record the difference, if any, then move on to the next change when dealing with the carb-doing to many changes at once won't really allow you to know which change actually made a difference, for better or worse. Try to check the ignition system, I didn't see in your post that any aftermarket system was installed, might throw a timing light on several of the plug wires to verify that your getting spark correctly. If I think of anything else, I'll post it! Good luck, you WILL get it runnin' great, just takes time to sort these things out! Post back and let us know how it's goin'/what you've found.
PS-Make sure your on the correct port for the vacuum to the dist.-should have vacuum at idle.
ChevyKiller I just wanna say, that I agree with Rob's reply. It could be your brain box... those suckers are notorious for giving you all kinds of little headaches. Also I had a buddy with a an '83 351M that had what sounds like the same excate problem... it turned out to be the ground wire on his coil was loose. Good luck!
first can you make the problem happen from under the hood where you can see it
but assumeing that this gas spout has an idle circuit and choke
take her round the block and warm it up so the cke is open or just hold it open set the idel circut
when i got my bronco sure its stock but the ckoke was about 360 outholding the choke open one idel screw was close and the other was dangleing.. what are people thinking
but i digress the idel screws may be loosing up seen this a few times replace the oring
