the phasers have dowel pins to stop the cam sprocket from turning to far.oil pressure is used to make the cam sprocket rotate to change the timing of the camshafts.when the oil pressure is exhausted the spring in the phaser will cause the sprocket to return back to the base timing resting against these dowels.the first designs the dowels where hollow and when when the sprocket returned to base timing it was causeing the pin to collapes over time.the new phaser has solid pins in them to keep them from collapsing

Thankyou for the facts concerning the phaser pin problem, I dont mind paying for the new phaser gear , its the labor for the job that costs the money.

I dont understand when a company knows there is a flaw in something they design, why they dont at least step up and say they will cover a portion of the amount to fix the problem.

Alot of the folks posting here had it done under warranty, some were duped by Ford techs telling them.."nothings wrong" they all sound like that, and then traded their trucks on Tundras. I bought my truck in winter, never heard the ticking until what warranty i had was gone.

I've owned SEVEN Ford trucks, none of them cost as much as i paid for this truck, and none of them sounded like a diesel when idleing.

Chris

P.S.

I suppose the broken pin pieces just rattle around the motor for awhile?????

Phaser knock or rattle or block oil passage or what now

I realize the thread is old, but I have an 05 5.4 3V 82,000 Miles and it has a couple issues that I have found no resolve to despite the various Ford Techs and Mechanics. It has a undesirable shake when the car is in drive, sitting at a stop, The Vehicle is in Drive, I am just stopped at a light or stop sign or just waiting. The vehicle seems to run very smooth, I guess the power is fine, it drives great. The truck idles at 500 RPM.....when I raise the idle to approx 550-650 RPM a loud knocking sound is heard. Ford said it was a clogged oil passage, and another mechanic said it could be timing...I do not know but an very concerned.

Here are some links to what the car sounds like at idle and at 650 RPM with the knock:
YouTube - Diesel Sound 5.4 3V Engine Knock, Tick, Rattle.MOV

YouTube - 550 Rattle on 5.4 3V Engine

Thanks in advance if anyone knows or has had these issues and able to resolve them.

knOCK RACKET

I have talked to quite a few mechanics regarding the tolerances in this motor...according to them its terrible close and running different oils can hurt the engine.

this problem is so big that ford would take a major hit if they recalled the phasers and they dont seem to be able to find an answer or they are worried that an answer would force them to fix a large number of 5.4 under warranty. i think its a joke, they should not have a problem selling a phaser that lasts longer than 50k. i almost bought a dodge hemi or a powerstroke due to my phasers but i love the rest of the truck to much.

phasers

How do we know it's always the phasers that are bad? What about the other components in the vct system ?

on my 04 it was the phasers, but my timing chain guide was broken too so really, im kinda lucky the phasers finally wouldnt let the truck run any other way but like a diesel with half its cylinders taking the day off. my mech said it shouldve come from the factory with synthetic oil but didnt, could be because it was built for canada, not real sure.

05 cam phasers

I have a 2005 f-250 5.4 3v with cam phaser issues,(spent 700.00 trying to fix) replacing the VCS (2) and the Cam sensors (2) helped the performance issues but nothing will fix this noise. 74000 miles the truck sounds like a diesel at idle.(noise goes away above idle) Its quite the disturbing sound that offers no confidence that everything is ok. I will be trading this off this week for a 2014 with the 6.2 2v motor. I also own a 2003 f-350 with the 5.4 2v motor never has any issues with it at all its 88000 miles. From what i can tell the 3v motors were crap. I would stay far away from the 3v version of the 5.4. It must have looked good on paper but in reality its garbage. Ford went back to the 2v design but made the motor a little bigger. just my experience and opinion.

So you got rid of a perfectly good 150 because it simply ticks at idle ,..you are a genius ,..

question

Seems to me the problem is lack of oil pressure in the upper end. All the lockout kits and reprogramming just treat the symptom. Has anyone figured out how to address the problem.
