96 shorty stalls and won't restart.

Hi my boy's star will run for 15 mins , stall and not restart for 30-40 mins. Sounds like an ignition module to me, are there other possibilities? And does the 96 have a distributor ignition? I can't get out to see it till the weekend. Thanx.

Is it a 4.0 or 3.0 engine? My 90 Aero with the 4.0 was doing something like that, it turned out to be a combo of things, Crankshaft positioning sensor and the HCT sensor. The HCT was running it in choke mode and carboned up the O2 sensor.

all 96s have electronic ignition
coil pack, ign. control module and computer controlled.
borrow or get it to an auto parts store with an OBDII reader or scanner and read codes.

the coil packs and ICMs are reliable, never seen one fail.
sounds like fuel

See if there are any codes first.

Off the cuff, it sounds like Cam/Crank sensor is failing on you, once it heat's up it stops putting out info.

No distributor on a 96, has camshaft pos (cmp synchroniser) instead. This wont stop the engine though.

Fuel system might be restricted or fuel pressure reg problem. Have you changed clogged fuel filter also check your air filter ? next check would be fuel rail pressure check. There is a shrader valve on the fuel rail on the left side near the front of the engine, (35-40 psi is normal). Also engine fuel mixture is controlled -partly by ECT ( Engine Coolant Temp sensor) this serves to enrichen the fuel/air ratio as needed depending on engine temp. Also clean your MAF meter.

This engine is OBD2 compliant & is possible to rig up a full digital dash with the right software /scan tool. This is very helpful for trouble shooting as ALL sensors can be monitored. Shame a fuel pressure sensor was not included in the sytem, but it is quite feasible to add one or rig up a pressure gauge for checking.

Aeroman.
