The **** is threaded on. On the last floor shifter I had I "liberated" a tap handle from a local bar (Red hook ESB was the name of the beer). Then I drilled out the old threads and then cut new threads so the tap handle would screw onto the shifter.

then all you need to do is make the hole in your new handle just slightly smaller than the shaft. Then put some towels on the ball and hammer it down tight. The handle on my reloading press is slip fit and I hammered it on, now I can lift my table by the handle, so it will hold on your transfer case. Should you want more, you can epoxy it too or if your really crafty you can use a release agent (cooking PAM oil works pretty on JB weld) on your splined shaft, build it out with an epoxy and thread your new epoxy adapter for the handle.

When I was in high school, I used time in shop class to drill out an 8 ball to make a shifter **** for my F-100. I just kind of twisted it onto the shifter and it self tapped, held up really good for several years. When I tried to put it in my new 95 F-150, the shifter was a little bigger and caused the 8 ball to split in half. Right now I have an aluminum shifter ball with LED's in it. It's a little ricey, but since the top half unscrews it makes for a real handy flashlight. I was amazed how bright 6 LEDs could be. If I turn it on at night, it blinds me in 2nd and 4th gear.
