ok im looking for a chip for my 04 150 extended cab 4x4. i pull a snowmobile trailer and a 22 foot fishing boat. what are the advantages and disadvantages if any of getting one. what is a good brand to get? i see alot of ppl get the edge but i hear super chip is good to or diablo. let me know and how much i should expect to pay for one. will this help with fuel mileage at all?
I think you'd find you money well spent if you looked into custom tuning from places like VMP or Troyer or (I know there's others but can't remember their names). These places can offer you performance enhancements that you'll surely notice while towing and you may get a benefit in the fuel mileage area, but that wont show up unless you stay off the go pedal.
so running a super chip is pointless then im not going ride it hard im trying to get a little better mileage when towing and i hear this will help. and better mpg in general only quick accelerations i would be doing is if i had to pull out quickly
I had the edge itmade the drive by wire more responsive but as far as HP I would like to see how much you really get. I sold mine a few months ago haven't really missed it. I believe that $375 for edge or superchips or $425 for a Troyer custom tune. I would spent the extra $50 for the custom tune.
Hi Still Smoking
Custom tuning is a better choice. We can save you some bucks over what has been mentioned on SCT products. As a Sponsor of FTE we have discounted pricing on X3 and Livewires custom tuned. See what others are saying about us here http://www.5startuning.com/testimonials.html. Improvements to the sensitivity in the Drive by wire and the elimination of transmission torqe reduction are some of the benefits of a SCT X3 flash tuner. In the end do your research with all and pick what is best for you. And look at the flexibility of each unit both short term and long term.
i just bought a Edge programer, i payed 449 for mine, love it. i drive a '05 F150 5.4L 4x4 with 33" Mud Grapplers with 20" wheels. befor the chip i got an avg of 9 mpg, now i get about 15 maybe little more depending on driving conditions and if the drive is more uphill or not. with constant speeding of 80 and mashing the gas i havent dropped below 13 mpg yet . i dont do much towing but i garentee if you get the edge, you wont be disapointed. It was well worth the money, and with me paying 3.44 for gas its going to pay for itself in no time. i looked on a few specs for the chips and Edge is probly the best out there at the moment, superchips would only give a 25hp/25lbs tor bonus, while the edge gave a 24hp/50lbs tor. Go up to your nearest Muffler/Accesories shop where you can buy them, they will help you out with alot of information, as long as they know what they're doing :P
And if any factory parts ever mess up, all you have to do is restor factory settings and take the pod out, and the dealership will never know you had it. just dont install the aluminum clamps for the HUD and you will be able to pull it out easy. if you put the clamps in, they will be able to tell you had a programer
My vote would be for the Edge also. You will get more out of a custom tune but they cost a little more and I really like the gauges on my edge. If I go to drive another vehicle I find myself always looking for those gauges.
If your buying it with towing in mind you'll like the Edge. I like the monitoring features. I can see trans temp as well as tons of other critical stuff all on one gauge.
SCT X 3 , or livewire if you want the gauges. I had a edge on my 2005 F150 didn't seem to make a diff. Sct added 1-2 MPG with custome tune. and you could feel the diff. with the tow tunes. got mine from 5startuning
