First Engine rebuild

Hi guys I'm going to rebuild my 300 in the spring so I'm going to start asking my questions now. First of all what is the best way to remove it, what can i attach the cherry picker to?

I'm also wondering if there is anything to watch out for? I've rebuilt tons of 2-stroke motorcycles but not a four stroke. So timing is a new thing for me. Any good info before i take this on will be much appreciated...

I'm sure a lot of the guys with more experience will have insight, but I removed my 300 a few weeks ago using webbing ran under the engine connected to the cherry picker. I routed it through the spaces in the manifold in two places -- front and rear and cris-crossed it making an X under the oil pan. I also had the benefit (?) of having the smog pump bracket available in the front. The only real problem I had was with re-installation. The motor is so long with the bellhousing attached that it was hard to get it back in the engine compartment. Mine is an 85 so you might not have that problem. Oh yeah, next time I'll wear steel toed boots when I take the flywheel off....

Buy yourself a good manual, they will have most of the information you need to do your motor, or just do a search here for some of the more specific things.

Get a Haynes for specs and Tom Monroe's How to Rebuild Small Block Fords. You're obvoiusly not doing a 302 but a lot of the procedures and info will relate. Other than that the 300 is pretty simple. Just do what you would with any other engine. Take your time, talk with your machinist, plan your build, be careful with your measurements and be stupid clean. Pay attn on your start up, break your cam in well and then change your oil right away, get all the prelube and shavings out. Good luck, let us know how it goes. Matt.

Buy a Haynes. To remove the engine: Take the hood off. Get the intake manifold off and remove two head-bolts (one at the front of the motor and one at the back). Attach the cherrypicker at these two points, being sure to screw the bolts in at least ten threads so they won't strip out when the motor hangs on something while you're bringing it out. Have a buddy helping, not your wfe, 'cause you'll yell at her and all hell will result. Been there, done that.

HAHAH!!! Nice... My wife has pretty thick skin when i'm around the truck these days.

Let me ask you guys a question. So tonight i removed the inner aprons, which means the battery as well, man that took some finessing. Should i be prepared to re install the battery so that the truck can be driven into the garage and removal of the engine can take place or can i get away with pushing the truck. I'm realizing at this point that this is turning into a huge job. I don't want more work if i can avoid it.

it's not my place to advise how to get it into the garage. Speaking from the safety aspect, if it's driveable by putting the battery back in it, I would consider that, in lieu of a back injury.
Good Luck.
