ECM compatability

i need to replace the ecm in my 94 f150 4.9L.

having a hard time finding the correct one, apparently there were many different ecms for this truck, the closest one ive found is this pic from ebay, all of the numbers match except 9800-136 and the 4B17, mine reads: 11715-52 and 4F09

like i said every other number on it matches, can someone tell me what the non matching numbers stand for or at least if this ecm will work in my truck?....btw the main reason i need to replace it is because it is idleing rough and missing. i've already gone through the truck many times and had other mechanics go through it and it comes down to a bad ecm.

before I bought a new computer, I would check for vaccume leaks, bad plug wires, or a carboned up egr. I would also run some sea foam through it to clean out the carbon on the valves and pistons. as long as I have been fooling with the computer fords {85?} I have never run into a bad computer. most mechanics are too lazy to repair a vehicle right, and tell you, bad computer. then, you replace the computer, truck still acts the same, they tell you wrong one. fix all underlying problems before you change the computer. just my .02

The only numbers that really matter are the ones on large print "POP2", if that's the same as what you have it'll work.

There are cases of the ECM getting water in the case and cause a short. But otherwise the computer is pretty reliable, it is the wiring, sensors, and actuators that tend to be the most troublesome. Personally, if you can get a temporary computer to test in your truck, that would be a better way to diagnose that it is a bad ECM.

If the F3TF-12A650-NC or the POP2 are the same as yours it will work.

You never said what the numbers off of yours was unless you are saying F3TF-12A650-NC and POP2 numbers are the same as the ones on your PCM.

Do not worry or use any other numbers on the PCM Computer other then these two number sets (F3TF-12A650-NC or POP2).

the F3TF-12A650-NC and POP2 numbers are the same so i guess it should work.

i already replaced everything else, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, map sensor, egr, etc. and checked the vacuum lines multiple times for leaks, can't track it down anywhere.....haven't run the seafoam through it, i've heard this can actually be bad for the engine in some cases. does anyone know of the seafoam actually damaging anything? i guess i could try that first. the main problem is that it Idles real rough, pretty much surges or misses and smells bad. once i'm moving it runs fine. the gas milage is horrible though

It sounds like your computer is running in FMEM mode.

When a sensor goes beyond a certain limit that the Computer can not trust it goes into Failure Mode until it gets a good sensor reading.

If you check your CM codes you should have a 998 or a 98 code along with at least one other code.
The 998 or 98 code is an information code that is telling you that the computer is running in FMEM mode and will also turn on the CEL. This 998 or 98 code always comes with other codes that cause the computer to go into FMEM mode.

So you need to run all of the PCM self-tests to find the item that is causing your problem.

FMEM: Failure Mode Effects Management. This alternative strategy protects vehicle function from adverse effect of an EEC component failure.

To read your CM codes or check for other types of codes and to run the self test go to one of these links below:

This is good for the KOEO test:

This one is good for the KOER test:
http://fordfuelinjection.com/?p=94

Or get a code reader, here is a good one.

Have you verified the FPR isn't leaking and that fuel pressure is correct?

I think youre right about it running in FMEM mode. i'll try those tests tommorow. will they give me the same codes as if i were to scan it with a code reader? i've done that before at autozone and it has a few codes. i forgot what they were because it was a while ago, i'll probably get it scanned again tommorow also...the check engine light is usually off, it only comes on once in a while and only when i'm moving. the funny thing is the truck seems to run a little better when the light is on.

also going to check the fuel pressure tommorow, there are no fuel leaks though, it leaks a few other things but no fuel.

Yes it will give the same codes.
I take it you are saying that there was no fuel in the Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR) vacuum hose when you took it off. If there was it would mean it was bad.

Subford where is the FPR located on my 88 with a 460. This truck is killing me now it is running but the idle is real high sometimes and last night I went out to start the truck after it was sitting for 8 hours or so and it was hydro locked. It did fire up after that. I am going to buy a scanner that looks like way to much counting for me lol

The FPR is located at front left side (drivers side) of the engine.

Subford thanks again one more thing. The line that runs off the bottom of the fpr it looks like 3/4" on my truck is disconnected and has a bolt jammed in it. Could this be my problem? or is this doing the same thing. Thanks

I take it you are saying someone removed the FPR and stuck a bolt in its place.
No it would not be doing the same thing. the Fuel Pressure could go very high and make the truck run very rich and flood a lot. This also would make the high pressure pump go out for lack of cooling.

Is the engine still FI or did someone put a Carb on it?

Thanks subford I took your advice and removed the fpr cut the line and capped it with a penny. It is running better but I need to get a new tank control valve ever since i removed it when the truck sits for a few hours+ it is hard to start.
