alright, before i get 20 guys posting "cut and replace", i want to justify my reasons for going this route...
1. this is just a temporary fix
2. this bed is not worth the hassle of new metal
3. i am just trying to make it look decent for the short term
4. this is practice bodywork for me...it will be my first time for even bondo
this is what i started with on the pass. side rear fenderwell
and this is after tring to remove most of the rusty metal
after that i applied rust converter...and now the driver's side which looks better, but i found out was worse
after beating around, i found a lot of bondo, about 1/4" thicK and fiberglass...this is after removing that
this will be next...but i will positively get this replaced in the near future
here within the next week, i am gonna get some bondo and see what i can do
I was just going to suggest the same thing that Antidodge said.
I have done it before for as a quick fix, steel wool works well too or even news paper,
then just skim coat it with some of the fiberglass filler like gorilla hair, and then top coat it with bondo, prime and paint, you will want to start sanding it as soon as it kicks off and hardens, and seal it with primer and paint, do not leave it exposed to moisture . it will shorten it life. bondo absorbs water after a while. so I have been taught??
Use some cold galvanizing spray paint first then primer and topcoat to keep it from
reappearing as fast. Even spraying the floor pans, frame rails inside the doors and
basically on the good sheet metal that is left will help to save that metal from a
similar fate.
no, i do not plan on getting rid of this truck, i just got it and im the poor sap that thought it was in better shape..... i will be searching for a better looking bed, i just want this to look decent for now..... thanx for all the input.... i was thinking about the great stuff already, i seen that idea before and thought that it was perfect for this...thanx guys ill keep pics posted as i progress
I hope your not driving that truck on the road though. The tread in the first picture is separating, and that doesn't make for a fun ride when it goes.
Thanks for the pic's, my truck is from Co. and not as bad as yours so I feel better now
I plan to cut and weld some pieces in mine but will also use bondo where it makes life easy. Hey it's a 4X4!
so far, i think its coming along pretty good.....if it turns out too bad, ill just drive to the junkyard, unbolt the bed and sell it for scrap iron...im sure i got a few pounds of bondo in there
