3-4 mpg..... No, you won't see that kind of improvement. How safe? If you run very small amounts, then your engine will probably live a long and healthy life. If you try to run propane as a serious power adder, you will destroy the engine in no time.
Propane is a fuel, but it is not injected at the point of detonation like diesel is from your injectors. It is drawn into the intake with your air, and is present in the combustion chamber for the entire compression stroke. Too much propane and it will pre-detonate. You'll end up with way extra advanced timing and the result of too much propane will be cracked pistons, blown headgaskets, etc. from too much cylinder pressure.
If you do decide to run a small amount of propane, it's still best to get some tuning that will retard the timing a bit to help reduce cylinder pressures.
Ok.......looks like he's on his own with the propane, I'm satisfiyed with my trucks performance just not fuel prices. I could not imagine killing my engine trying to get a couple of mpg's. I don't think I could even risk it with very small amounts. I will warn him.
