I have noticed lately that when starting cold, the engine will not start/idle properly. I have to hold the gas pedal in order to keep running. Sometimes it starts right up, others not. Well, yesterday was the worst, I could not keep it running enough to drive a couple miles down the road. Then suddenly, I hear "something" kick in and it is idling normally. Everything under the hood is tight.
Any ideas? Thanks
I recently had the same problem with my 1999 F250 5.4 V8. Through the excellent advice in this forum, I learned that it was likely that the IAC(Idle Air Control) was on its way out. Replacing the IAC fixed the problem. This is a fairly easy job. Search this forum for tips on replacing the IAC.
Yup your IAC is bad. Id either replace it or clean it. People down in the v-10 forum have cleaned theirs and it went back to normal.
Cost of a new IAC valve from dealership: $100 exactly
Cost of cleaning your IAC valve: IAC gasket from dealership (will need to be replaced): $6.00 Brake cleaner or CARB cleaner: $3-$6 give or take.
Total: $9.00 to $13.00.
Cleaning shouldnt take long or if u go with the route of replacin it, it shouldnt take long either.
Also, if you decide to go with the route of cleanin the valve and have a hard time finding where it is on the engine, those instructions should help u.
