Well My IAC valve has been acting up latly the truck idles real high.
The auto parts store wants $80 for a new one, But I foung that if I unplug the wires runing to it the problem stops and the truck idles normal.
My question is if I keep it unpluged will it cause problems with anything else?
I left mine unplugged for a few days, and all i got was a check engine light(im actually thinking about unplugging it again).... i wonder if you could connect the wires going to the IAC to keep the check engine light off.....probably not though.
First! Unplugged IAC may cause engine stall when cold.
If you cleaned IAC and porblem does not go away, check ECT and ECT wiring. May be ECU consider engine cold and increase idle speed.
If it idles fine unplugged then the IAC is either bad or you have a vaccum leak some where else it should idle very poor or not at all with the IAC unplugged.
I Pulled mine off and cleaned it with gumout carb cleaner spray then cleaned out the gummout cleaner with WD40 spray remounted it to the engine and everything was fine, and that was 2 years ago and still good.
I tried cleaning my IAC a couple of months ago with WD-40 & a foam swab, so far so good. (don't use a cotton swab, it's linty)
Mine was sticking where the plunger shaft goes through the shiney metal disc, into the electromagnet end. There were carbon deposits on the shaft, causing it to hang up.
Don't know long the cleaning will last, but I see one poster has had good luck for two years now, thats pretty danged good & certainly worth a cleaning try imo.
Unless you have a vacuum leak, it should not idle cold w/ the iac unplugged.
My experience w/ cleaning them is that they only last for a short time after that before they start to stick again, so once you clean it and confirm that was the problem, then I'd recommend replacing it.
$80 for a new one seems very steep, I just replaced the one on my Mom's Aerostar, and it only cost $38. Try RockAuto.com, they probably have the best prices.
