I was wandering if I changed the gears in my truck would it make any difference in mileage. I'm already going threw the the Turbo and cleaning it out and about to put a 4" exhaust with a AFE intake system. Along with a shift kit.
I'm running a 01' F350 4x4 CC 4" lift w/ TOYO MT's 315/75r16 3.73 stock gears. And I was told if I went to 4.10's it would help but I've heard all types of comments and this is the most informative site so I thought I'd ask.
I think Nic pretty much covered it all. 4.10's will help with your power in the lower rpm range and help MPG's in city driving, but if you want better mileage look at stock tires. I don't know if the city MPG savings would be enough to pay for the cost of the gear swap.
A 4inch lift with 225 would look like you no what. when you lift a truck and run 35's about 15mpg is going to be about what you will avg, with a egg under the petal. The higher the truck, the more wind under it. To get the truck's mileage back you would have to take the lift off and run 265 75 16 tires.
that's kind of what I was thinking. Plus I have replacement bumpers and heavy side-steps. I love the look of it but the economical aspect is a little out of touch. It wasn't too bad when diesel was $2 but we just went to $3.89. In Aug. it was $2.64. I'm going to look into a mini-truck just for driving around town and the ranch.
