I was looking at a 01 f150 4x4 with the 5.4,130,000K when I started it up and it was idling it had a small knocking sound but after I went for a 2 minute test drive it was quiet.Anyone hear of this,do these engines have a week bottom end?You could hear it better from the bottom of truck not from the front with hood open. Are there any things I should look for when buying one of these trucks?
I have a 97 5.4L with 146K, the noise you hear is most likely piston slap and is normal for the engine when cold. Dissimilar metals is said to be the cause but shouldn't cause any problems.
You may have a slapper, caused by short piston skirts. Like the previous poster, it hasn't been known to cause damage......ever heard the 99 and up Chevy trucks with the 5.3 engine? They are the loudest slappers around.
Our 1998 Expedition (sold it a few years ago) did this for a while. We were resigned to the fact that it was normal until I bought a Jetta TDI for my commute and started buying diesel oil in bulk. I decided to run the same Rotella 5W40 Synthetic Diesel oil in both cars and the noise went away after the first oil change. Never heard it again after that.
