My girlfriends 2000 Ranger 4x4 (116k miles) speedometer and tachometer have been intermittently failing (turn the car on - speedo and tach needles don't move). I believe the oil pressure and battery also don't move - although I think gas and temp work. I believe the odometer also stops working.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Shifts fine (its an automatic).
This information would leave me to believe there is a connector that is corroded or slipping out or something similar.
I'd prefer to check all that I can before pulling out the instrument cluster - does anyone have any pointers as to which connecter may be the culprit and where it would be located? I've got a haynes but it doesn't really show much. If I've got to pull the cluster please let me know that too. It looks like one of the dash lights (on the far right) is burned out - so it wouldn't hurt to replace all the lights.
I think you can make her cluster enter diagnostic mode, http://www.mustangworld.com/ourpics/fcar/dtcodes.htm This works on my 2002 F250, so it's not just mustangs. One of the steps makes all of the needles peg, if her's don't move you know the cluster is toast. This should make all the needles move.
Because of the selectivity, I'd suspect a ground problem. There should be several grounds under the cluster and behind the driver's kick panel. Check them for corrosion and make sure the bolts are tight.
