Smile test egr diconnected

what do you think about disconnecting the egr for a long tow. approx. 3000 miles just to check mpg improvment.??
made trip in 06 and avg. 9.3 mpg.
made trip in 07 and avg. 9.2 mpg.
both trips with egr connected.
will be towing 36' 5ver wgh. 14k #
read egr inf. last night until my eyes crossed and still couldn't decide if this is a bad or good decision.
i could report back at the end of march.
just thinking what you might think...

thanks

imo, if it isn't giving you issues then don't unplug it. not that big of a deal, i dont think.

I say try it and report back. I will be doing the same but my first long tow won't be for a couple of months. I've been happier than ever with it unplugged on my truck but I haven't towed the trailer since. I believe most of the problems with my 04 have been EGR related. 2 egr valves, 1 egr cooler, 1 intake manifold (thick with carbon) and 1 turbo (over boosting, blew the CAC tube 4 times, 2 dents in the hood) replaced along with a few flashes and sensors along the way. stock truck. I'm interested in the outcome and will post my results as well.

I have had mine unplugged for about 10 k miles now, and honestly cannot tell any difference c/o motor responce etc. I THINK I might have lost 1/2 mpg, but really don't know. Here's what I do know, at 104K miles I have had at least three/four occaisions when climbing a grade a 60mph and then trying to accelerate, the motor would cough, spurt and lose power until I let off the peddle, and humbly get back into the slow lane. I make the same 400 mile trip about twice a month, which includes. driving over the Siskyious. This missing has happened with two seemingly good EGRs, the first replaced at about 50K miles, the second started doing the same thing at about 90K. Both valves were coked, but had no soild debris as I've seen on this forum. The last time it happen, I pulled over, stopped the motor, waited a few minutes then unplugged the EGR. Its been 14K miles including cross country with no issues c/o missing while accelerating up an incline. I have my third EGR sitting in box, and cannot decide if I should put in or not. My truck is an early 03 bulid stock except my own zoo-dad mod. and a coolant filter, which has never turned up any debris after two filters and 20K miles. After five years this truck is still a hot rod, and love driving it. Other then the above, it has never caused me a problem. Also the Pioneer Z-2 makes long dirves seem like short ones. Bottom line imo, if it ain't broke........

I had mine unplugged for around 5k. Its plugged back in now. The truck was maxin out at 20lb Boost, Read on here somewhere awhile back when i noticed my boost was low WOT that the PCM will go into "Safe" mode and that was the end result. Plugged it back in and back to normal.

I didnt see or notice any real gain in anything. However, let us know what you find out I would be curious to read on it.

How much MPG gain? I'm new around here so I'm not sure what Cat delete is, I'm guessing it is the removal of the catalitic converter. Did you do the work yoursel? What does it entail?

I usually tow with it UNHOOKED because the EGT seems to be lower . I can't be sure because I usually don't tow the same route and if I do the outside temp will definitely be different.

ive never unpluged mine due to the fact that the cooler take a crap due to the heat temp rising above the melting point of the silver solder thats used on the cooler. So iam thinking unpluged the exhaust gas doesnt circulate Thus RETAINED heat.I do plan on the EGR cooler delete this spring/summer for sure. But unpluged with cooler inplace no thanks

Just my .02

Next question: will it pass insection and/or emissions test or do you have to replace it for test? and also not to be nitpickky but just for my edification.. is this considered a legal modification?
