I'vegot a 92 F-150 with an 87-91? 302 in it. I am looking to boost my hp because 185 isnt that great. What should I do? 270 pounds of torque is ok but anything to help that would be good. Keep in mind I have a limited budget and am looking for bolt ons. Also when does the 302 make its peak hp?
A cam change will do more for it than bolt ons. About the only bolt on I'd suggest is shorty headers. You've got a roller cam, but it's the smallest roller Ford used in the 5.0's. The specs are 244/256 advertised duration (not the @.050 duration) lift is .379/.395. You could also swap to 1.7 rockers to improve the lift some (it'll go up to .403/.420 with 1.7's) If you do a cam swap, you'll need to limit that to a Speed Density friendly grind. Also, swap the paper filter for a K&N style filter and remove the silencer from the filter box.
From what I've learned on this site so far, it would be heads (GT40's or reworked stock heads), cam change and exhaust (headers). As far as specifics on what cam, I dont know. I'll be looking for opinions on that soon.
If the motor was out of a truck it probably has a flat tappet cam in it, same specs as the base roller but they are cheaper to replace. The CompCams 31-255-5 is a good upgrade that retains the stock firing order.
3800RPM? I could have swore my 302 in my '86 F-150 is rated at around 280 ft-lbs at 2400RPM. Not sure on the measurement itself, but I am sure it was rated for its peak at 2400.

302s need to be modded from the inside out, not the outside in. Your heads and cam are the biggest setbacks. I would recommend buying a junkyard 302 motor and building that up as cheaply or powerful as you'd like. Definitely pull the heads off and port them and get new valvesprings. Definitely change the cam. When its all built up and ready to go you can pull your old sloppy one and drop in the new one in a weekend. That saves you the down-time if you need your truck everyday.
