Its snowing (again) and the 4X4 won't engage. A little over a week ago, I had the truck in four wheel drive (auto, with the dash switch) and it worked fine. When I came out to the pavement, the light wouldn't go off on the dash and the front hubs wouldn't disengage. Stayed that way for about half an hour til I pulled into get some supper. When I came out and started the truck, the light was off on the dash (I assumed the hubs were disengaged as it didn't turn hop). On the way home I noticed (felt more than heard) an intermittant hum/vibration from the drivetrain at about a one second frequency.
I tried the 4X4 again a few days later but the light wouldn't come on.
Forward to tonight.... I knew I was going to need the four wheel drive so I manually engaged the hubs before I left the house. Backed her up and drove off with the tail swinging...obviously the front wheel weren't helpin me at all. I still felt the one second frequency hum as I was going along, so i pulled over and set the hubs back to auto. The hums still there.
Does any one have any idea what is going on? I thought that if there was a vacuum leak or something else to cause the auto 4X4 to not work, then the manual would. Are my hubs totally shot?
Hey CanadianSmokie not sure but will take a stab at it. If you unlock the manual hubs and put in 2X4 then back up a bit 10 feet or so. Now get out and under and grab the front drive shaft and give it a twist. It should turn over readily....means you're unlocked right. Not sure on how the vaccum system works as mine is an old '96 CC F350 7.3 4X4. The vibration may be a warn universal joint???
I don't know how to fix your problem but it must suck to live in a place where it snows in mid-March.
H1449-6....snow Mid-March.....suck....???? Guessing you've never tried powder skiing hahahaaa.... Kids, wife and I'll be thinking of you tomorrow.....as we'll be out rippin' through all the NEW FRESH SNOW. While you're what.....? mowing.....watching the grass grow (just kidding).....heh heh.....it's not all that bad...snow I mean, in mid March or April......
If you are manually locking them then it has something to do with the transfer case shift motor. With them manually locked the vacuum doesnt matter. Have you checked all the fuses?
Haven't had a chance to check the fuses, but will do tomorrow. For the sake of being lazy and not searching, does anyone have a diagram of the fuse box or know where the fuse might be for the four wheel system?
Thanx for your help so far... any other ideas would be appreciated. Don't want to have to take it to the dealership to diagnose.....
Well, just back back from the dealership... its the shift motor for the transfer case thats gone. Sounds not to bad right?..... $850 for the motor!! I'm going to see about getting a used one or see if one of the Ford parts sponsors on here can do better. According to the tranny tech, it's not uncommon for these to go. Just thought this might help out someone else whose four whell drive sustem stops functioning.
Really good question. From what I remember on my 2000 there are 2 bolts holding on the electric motor and a wire plug in. I found a replacement part around $189 and 30 minutes to install after the truck is on the hoist. ON mine I would not even jack it,, just slide under and change it.
$850 sounds a bit like taking advantage of someone driving in the snow. Summer prices would probably be lower is my guess.
Vettedvr, where is the motor located and is it easily accessible? Thanx...
It is just behind the transmission at the front of the driveshaft. If you crawl under you should see it on the transfer case. I think it is on the front if I remember correctly.
You might just clean the connections before you order a new one.
