My parents have finally decided to help me get a newer truck. i have been looking for quite a while, as alot of you know. i was watching some diesel videos, and got to thinking about weather i want an f.250 or an f.350. Ive noticed that alot of guys that built these huge, bada$$ diesels only go with 3/4 ton trucks. Is there a good reason for this? I want a go anywhere, haul anything, beat anyone kind of truck. what are the advantages of a 1-ton. i would assume they are a little bit tougher, but are they realy, do they weigh more? i didnt realy care what i get until now, as long as it is a super duty, But is a 1-ton going to be much if any better than a 3/4?
depending on the year your looking at will make a difference in the stock items. Mostly it is in the frame, transmission and rear end. Is where you'll see the difference.

this is incorrect, the tranny is not different due to 250 or 350 the frame is not different and the rear end is only different if you order different gears, which doesn't matter if 250 or 350. i know that in the 05 year the only difference was 17" wheels on 250 18" on 350(also an option) and 4" rear spacer as opposed to 2' in in the 250. i think but not sure that the rear leaf springs are heavier springs.
To add to redford's post, the 350 has a higher listed GVWR by 1,100 pounds I think. Like I said earlier, for all practical purposes they are the same. Also, I think factory overloads are stock on a 350 but an option on the 250.
If you are not going with a dually F-350 then the trucks vary just a little bit. If you are not going to do any heavy towing and really just getting a truck to build and play with you just need a 250.
Get an insurance quote, and check what registration and taxes are, before deciding which one.
3/4-ton is still a possible "passenger vehicle" and a 1-ton is flat-out commercial.
Usually insurance rates are much different.
Even some incorporated villages and towns have parking rules on residential streets (and even your own driveway!) that make an F350 illegal overnight, while an F250 is OK. Been there, done that ...
The insurance companies that I had always quoted said they can insure anything with a bed all the way up to the F-350s, BUT if you get a flat bed that is flat out commercial.

Some insurance companies will not insure commercial (1 ton) trucks. The companies that do, charge for the privilege. Check the specs... Often, the differences are not significant in major ways. In the 80's, the F350 had a completely different frame and different brakes. Now, that line is far more blurred.
