This is my first post. I have a shudder problem. When I accelerate moderately to heavily from a complete stop, there is a shudder and sort of a thud. I assumed it was the slip yoke, so I pulled the drive shaft and lubed the hell out of it. Same problems. I also recently changed the transfer case fluid. Does anyone have some sort of solution? Can the limited slip clutches cause this shudder in straight line acceleration? It is a 2004 FX4 supercrew. Thanks in advance! Matt
The 04s did have some ls shudder due to clutch packs, but this would normally occur when turning and accelerating. If you lubed the slip yoke, I would look at the pinion angle. Search through the tsbs, I believe there is one for your issue.
I had a shudder while turning. And a shudder while straight line towing up a grade. Took it in for service and the Ford dealer said it was the clutch packs causing all my problems. They replaced the clutch packs, put in new oil, and modifier at a cost of $980.00. My extended warranty covered it. My truck now has just over 30,000 miles. I have not had a problem since they worked on it. They said it was a very common problem with the LS F150's.
I am going to try lubing the yoke some more. I used Amsoil synthetic grease, is there something else I should be using? I also may have not used enough. I also need to check the yoke for wear. I get that "bump" feeling when I accelerate. I also have that rear end whine at about 55-60mph. That fix calls for a new pinion and ring gear. Screw that. I don't know, there sure is a lot of troubleshooting ahead. Thanks again for the input. Forums are the best place for info. Matt
well, I removed the driveshaft, and greased the heck out of it again, and it seemed to keep the thud, and or bump/shudder at bay. We'll see. I must not of used enough grease the first time. I read the TSB on pinion angle, and I was wondering how you would change the angle? Do you put wedges between the springs and the axles? I know it calls for a 1 degree wedge.
Yes, it is a wedge that goes between the axle tube and springs. If I remember correctly, according to the tsb, you have to measure, try one wedge and if that doesn't fix it try another degree wedge.
