91 Explorer, 202,000 mi. Today the engine developed a shudder on acceleration. I noticed it mainly in overdrive when the engine was turning 1800-2000 RPM. Seems to go away when shifted out of overdrive. Transmission was overhauled 12 mos. ago and seems to work ok. New motorcraft plugs and wires within the last 1000 mi. Engine idles smooth. Seems to shake only under hard load. Does the coil bank give any trouble on these? I don't speak fuel injection too well, suggestions? Thanks
I have the same problem. I already replaced the coil bank, didn't help. If I disconnect the battery cable to reset the computer, the overdrive won't downshift into the low (1800) rpm range. Shudder returns after I drive it for a while and the tranny shifts into overdrive in the low rpm range.
I have found some fouling in the middle spark plug on the drivers side. If I replace that plug or clean it, the engine doesn't shudder quite as bad, but it's still there.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Feb-02 AT 07:02 PM (EST)]If you have found some fouling in that middle plug.
suggest you start looking at spark plug wires, fuel injectors
make sure your wires are not crossfiring or breaking down and shorting to ground.sometimes you can start your car at night when its completely dark
take the lightbulb {conveince} under the hood out an look around '') ')
sometimes you can actually see the wires short out or crossfire.
when the engine shudders do you see the rpm's very?
better do a compression chk soon also

good luck

I have a 91 Manual transmission and It shutters when I step on the gas and goes away when the rpm is around 2 grand. I am at a loss.
Any Ideas. If I didnt know any better i would say the timing is off.
