The 428 you want is probablly one of ford most sought after big blocks. You could have a 460 plus trans for alot less then a none running 428, even the bare block gets good money. Your cheapest performance upgrade in the intake and carb swap on your 390, than you can spend all the time you want looking for that dream engine and still have a good runner.

That sounds good. If you were to quote a possible price of an Interceptor 428, what would your quote be? Should I move forward with a 4 Barrel Edelbrock Intake Manifold and Carb or stick with the 2 Barrel Holley I have now?
428 interceptor= BIG DOLLARS, prices could range from 1000 to 10000, all depends on what you want to do with it. As with all engines, horsepower costs money. Your best bet is the intake and 4 barrell for the 390, a good running 390 is a nice engine.
I would stick with the 390. Is your PCV valve working? That can cause an oil leak. Also if you have a mechanical oil pressure gauge, the tubing could be leaking. Just throwing ideas out there. As far as the 428, If you have a good eye at the junkyard, you might be able to get one out of a mercury. If you measure the stroke, and it comes out to about 4", then that is either a 410, which is a 390 block with a 428 crank, or a 428. Also look for FE's with a counterbalanced dampener, because all 352/360/390 & 427's were internally balanced, and the 410 & 428 were externally balanced.
Personally Id throw in a Comp 268 High Energy cam, 4bbl, and exhaust and I think that you would be very satisfied with that setup. The 268 has a nice little lope, and still has plenty of low end torque for towing.
Just my 2¢
